You should search to read about LTE on the Verizon forum. Look for a poster named TwinsX2Dad ... you'll learn a lot.
LTE is a varient of GSM, but no VZW is not going GSM.
LTE is not GSM and LTE is not CDMA. There are the GSM providers who have migrated to WCDMA (aka UMTS/HSPA) for their 3G and will be going to LTE, and there are the CDMA providers who have 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO (which are CDMA protocols), and are also migrating to LTE (or Wi-Max, in the case of Sprint).
LTE is a totally new air interface and back-end network which is designed to interoperate with the legacy networks.
