BlackBerry and T-Mobile in "positive" discussion, handsets to make a return? TmoNews

"Positive" discussions...whatever that means. Give us 10.3.1 with WFC first, TMO.

Better than the two companies not talking and TMO customers not getting new devices, no?

Depends on who's talking from TMO's side. If it's a non-man child (like COO Mike Sievert,) something good may come out of the talks.

Maybe Legere has calmed down now that Tmob is showing profits. Plus with the current plans Tmobile has less incentive to tie the consumer to a certain handsets.

I'm a hopin for 10.3.1 with wifi calling on TMO!!?? I think it will be a coin toss today but if they make up then I am sure we will see 10.3.1 with wifi calling at least on the Z10 and Q10 in the future.

I really doubt they're going to add WFC to any newer BB10 phones. I'm doubtful of whether they'll even push 10.3.1 out, with or without WFC.

This is the story I tell myself about 10.3.1:

T-mobile has a big competitive advantage in offering wifi calling. They are willing to put out the small effort to test the update to make sure wifi calling works. Hell, they sent me a special wifi router (probably cost them $30 or more) to ensure the wifi calling works on my Q10.

So I think they will release the update.

What is so great about wi-fi calling? I've seen it everywhere on the forums.

It's when your phone uses WiFi instead of a cellular network to make calls and send texts. This is helpful in places where you may have bad cell coverage but a WiFi network available (like in a house basement, or a cabin up in a remote place.) But you can also use it internationally. Just hop on a WiFi network and and calls/texts to the US will be billed as if you were here.

So you cam basically text internationally if you have WiFi calling. Interesting. Either than that it's only important if you have bad signal at your house or work? I got good enough signal.

Where ever you are, on planet earth, you can have full phone functions even if there is no cell signal avail. It's not just about texting. Once you start using it, trust me, you will find it incredibly useful. It was seen (by those who don't use it) as just a novelty, but now even -- apparently -- at&t is getting it.

So basically phones that are unlocked (classic&passport) can't get it with tmo. Only carrier branded?

They don't have to be a carrier brand phone, only a carrier-approved OS. I used wifi calling on my unlocked Z10. The last OS version that T-Mobile approved and which included this feature would have been 10.2.1.

Right now it has to be the Z10 or Q10 model that T-mo supported. Then it has to have an OS that supports wifi-calling. For example, you would need a Z10 model 100-3. The last official OS I got for my branded T-mo was .2228. And the OS sent to my unbranded was .3442. Both support wifi-calling. So... it does not have to be branded.

Oh alright. Learning here. So I'm guessing passport's and classic's aren't supported right now?

Right. There are two requirements: approved handset and approved OS. Any BB10 phone other than a Z10 -3 or Q10 -5 fails both requirements.
