thanks for the info,
do you have any imformation when will it be released to the orange network? currently, all is verizon/vodafone, I'd like to get an orange Storm too
thanks!
update: Orange Storm equivilent has wifi ! unknown if UMA is supported
Are you sure you don't mean the Blackberry Javelin?
I thought the storm was a vodafone lifetime exclusive.
technical told me its the Storm but with wifi, i guess the exclusive'ness ends when you do a few tweaks & defo when you add wifi its a non exclusive likeness, employee in technical led me to believe its 3G thats what makes me think its not Javelin
Voda omitted wifi prob to bump up data charges....to bump up share prices lol, well its 3G afterall !
Id imagine it will support UMA for Orange's push at it
any ideea when is going to be available as orange device?
WiFi? That's odd. According to RIM, they left WiFi out of the Storm because there wasn't room on the motherboard.
? dunno ? but Storm equivelent with wifi sounds like a Unique product as much as Voda's exclusive.....
Well if they can't get the Bold to work on 3G after doing a few tweaks they've go no hope with the Storm.....or is it all part of the plan....stop selling the Bold (make up an excuse) delay it & then replace it in favour of a touch screen Storm ?
who knows but 156 technical " wirefree " are outsourced to WDS Global & they must do all the new handset testing ?
where the storm supports Voda's data plans in excess overusage - 's, Orange support UMA via wifi ( remember in France Orange wi-fi is the leader ) and in the UK Orange actively still do 5 Unlimited Broadband for Unique customers as a tie in to Unique, Orange UK are correct not to implement the basic UMA handset range avail in FR but they need to set thier game with higher spec models & head office France should be pushing manufacturers as Nokia the market leader with a 3G UMA handset, if Blackberry get there first then cool but BB from a consumer shift from Nokia needs to have a optional touch screen application like a Nokia keypad onscreen layout for texting as qwerty is not a shift many consumers will be prepared to sacrifice, seeing thats software & not hardware BB would be foolish not to implement such
3G UMA has been avail since August 2006 ( Kineto Wireless )
Sony Ericsson ( G705u ) released the worlds 1st 3G UMA handset, Nokia cant even get a 2G handset stable, so BB are better getting in there before the market leader ;) and they better, i have been Nokia mainly in last 10yrs ( few SE - horrible layouts ) simply for texting Nokia has a very good user interface even the Pearl dumfounds me sometimes as my mind is still set to a Nokia layout as is a great deal of the telecom market
could be, pull Bold & replace with Storm " equivelent " could save Orange millions on grounds of BB failure to provide a 3G suitable handset to Orange if BB done the Orange branding inhouse, I was told thier were complications months ago with Bold prior to launch but Orange released it anyway.....
perhaps part of thier gameplan with BB ? who knows
but BB want to respond with a STABLE 3G UMA handset asap ( & b4 Nokia ! ) for Orange & keep Orange sweet while ensuring Orange's commitment on future orders & the share price of course !
Vodafone dont have an exclusive - it omitted wifi, that gap covers Orange worldwide strategic plans for UMA, Vodafone have paid most the costs for BB & now to add wifi & sell to all the UMA networks ;)
Hi,
Given that Vodafone have announced the storm is to launch on the 7th November do you have any clarity on a launch date on orange (if at all)??
Hopefully they'll have it on Orange by the time my contract is due for expiry... (July 2010!)
I think you guys are living in a pipe dream. I can not see Vodafone paying Rim to design and build them an exclusive phone and then sit back and let them supply it to other networks. If you want a BB Storm then you will either have to buy an unlocked one of ebay or change your supplier to Vodafone. Otherwise go for the HTC Touch which is exclusive to Orange and what I think you are getting confused with.
Dear Mr Orange UK:
I work at 157 CTS for orange, above 156 wirefree - believe me when i say we do no testing for new handsets, we are also blackberry tech, not a word about this handset, nor are we testing it, another team entirely do this (no idea who) i will find out about the actual deal weather orange will release the storm later today when i go in
Well, as Orange UK suggested there would be a release, there will not be a release late nov, early dec - there aren't any documents to support that Orange will even get the storm, if they do it won't be until next year at the very earliest i'd imagine. As rjay said i can't imagine voda paying for a few motnhs, then releaseing it elsewhere!
Speaking to Vodafone yesterday they assure me the storm was made exclusively for vodafone at their request, he said Vodafone commissioned its build, so I can not see it being out at any time on any other network. He also told me that all their stock of the storm has been returned to Blackberry for a firmware upgrade as it was running too slow, so I am still waiting to be able to order mine as an upgrade:mad:. Beware anyone thinking of buying one off Ebay, it will probably have the original firmware and I am not sure if the upgrade is available as a download. I would waite a few weeks before buying if I was you.
[Edit:]
1) By all accounts you can download the upgraded firmware from the Blackberry site.
2) A word of warning. I have just read on the Blackberry Storm help page on Vodafone's site that the Storm can not be unlocked and you can not get an unlock code from them as it is exclusive to Vodafone and the Vodafone network. I am not sure if this is true or if Vodafone are just saying this, but keep it in mind if you are tempted to buy one of the so called unlocked Blacberry Storms currently being sold on Ebay at a rip off price of 600 or more.
I PM mrfruit about this and posted a reply on 25th Nov ( where it went ?? ), the tech person I spoke to was mistaken the HTC HD was a BB Storm
so apologies all - sadly we wont see a BB touchscreen on Orange :(
I don't know how valid or reliable this is but I recently read on the internet that RIM have cut short their exclusivity with Vodafone over the Storm 2. Makes sense as the iPhone exclusivity has been revoked as it now opens more scope for sales and especially with the up coming Orange TMobile merger (becoming the largest UK network provider).

RIM's press release for the S2 said that it would 'initially' be launched on Voda. Nothing has been confirmed as to exactly how long the exclusivity will last for (it's only been around 4 weeks so far). I'm holding off getting the Bold 9700 on an upgrade in the hope something is announced in the next month :-)
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com
im waiting to upgrade my bb been holding off for the 9700 on orange which is slated for 7th dec i think but may just stick around and see if there are any more announcements of the storm 2 coming to orange
I think the 9700 will be a better handset, unless your after a touch screen. The Storm 2 is only better in terms of media IMO. I heard it should be on Orange in the new year, but who knows. One thing to consider though, quite a few people sent back the Storm 2 in favour of the 9700.
yeah understand what your saying i do like the 9700 aswel only thing is i have the 8900 and im looking for something different although 9700 is newer and has more features like 3g they are still very similar phones where as the storm 2 is totally different its got the large screen will support opengl and by all the videos and the device ive had a go on the typing isnt all to bad hmmm decisions decisions
