I usually leave mine signed on all the time - unless I don't feel like chatting. I haven't found it to run down the battery much to notice. I don't pay any extra fees - but I'm with T-Mobile.
I leave mine running all the time but I have unlimited with tmo

I usually sign out simply because I don't use it that much. I tried to figure out how to use it for yahoo messenger but couldn't figure it out :(
