If other platform users want BBM, are they willing to pay for it?

To be honest, I don't think so. With so many free instant messaging options out there, I don't see that approach being a viable option.

The vast majority of Whatsapp users have NOT in fact paid for it, but the difference is that Whatsapp is a tiny company with relatively tiny overhead, AND they are growing, so they can afford the long view.

Even still, those who HAVE paid only paid $1. BB can't survive on a lifetime payment of $1 per user. It's far too big a company.

Why pay for it when it's going to be free?

Nope. There is no way that I would pay for bbm. I'm probably a minority, but text messaging works for me. If I need to send files or presentations, I use email. The email feels comfortable for me due to my employment with DoD.

I enjoy the bbm groups, but realistically I probably couldn't get my friends to use it; they are perfectly happy with whatever they are using. I have a friend that won't text at all. You have to tweet him for a response. He's to cheap to pay for messaging. Thinks it's a ripoff.
