I have a bit of an issue and I was wondering if anyone else has run into this. It seems that with the new version of Office (2007) word documents that have been saved in the 97-2003 (.doc) format will not open on the blackberries. I have tried on several different blackberries including the 8830 WE and the 9530.

The thing I dont understand is that word documents created in the previous version of Word ( Word XP, Word 2003) open up just fine. Is this a known issue with the blackberries? Does this even have anything to do with the blackberries or is it something with word?

Any insight on this issue or a known fix would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a loss with this and I have several users waiting for an answer.

    Thanks.

Once again Microsoft has changed the .doc file's format in an attempt to force everyone to upgrade.

I wasn't aware of a problem with earlier formats saved by the new software, but it could be something as simple as a host program version embedded in the file, which is not accepted by the older BB programs.

Try saving and transmitting documents in RTF format. This is pretty standard, supports most of the features needed in standard business docs, and is supported by most WP programs.

I have no problems viewing files that are saved in an older format with MS Office 2007 on my Blackberry Curve.

I have a bit of an update to the issue.

I got to sit down today and talk to the person having the issue with the word documents. It seems they were able at one point to open documents created in 2007 and saved in the older 97-2003 format.

This issue must have just started recently then. We are running a BES server. Would that have anything to do with the issue? I read a few things on the knowledgebase for RIM today but none of the fixes they listed worked. We havent done any software updates to our BES recently either so I wouldnt see there being a issue there.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have some information on this if anyone is interested or having the same issue as I am.

I gave in yesterday and called Verizon. I was then forwarded to a tier 2 support specialist who then forwarded me on to a Blackberry support technician.

Apparently this issue revolves around our BES. With the Blackberry, no matter which Blackberry you are using if your BES version is not up to date office 2007 documents will not open on your Blackberry. We are running version 4.1.3.18. Even if a document created in Word or Excel 2007(.docx , .xlsx) is saved in the 97-2003 format (.doc , .xls), the Blackberry still picks them up as a 2007 document regardless. Upgrading the BES to the newest version available will resolve the issue from what I was told.

I haven't updated our BES yet but I plan on doing either today or tomorrow. I will keep everyone posted and let you know the end result.
