Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS are headed for a knock-down fight over which has the smallest install base in the US, according to WMPowerUser. BlackBerry's share continues to plummet, according to StatCounter, as Windows Phone struggles to grow past its approximate 1 percent penetration. At this rate, the two will switch spots on the leaderboard during the last few weeks of 2012.
RIM has done nothing but lose the foothold it once had in the smartphone market in the last few years while Android and iOS have duked it out over positions one and two, respectively. StatCounter shows BlackBerry OS at just under six percent install base in the first week of 2012, and it sits just above three percent now; by early December, the OS is predicted to be on just one and a half percent of smartphones.
Microsoft and Nokia attempted to call down a nuclear strike to the smartphone marketplace with the high-profile release of the Nokia Lumia 900 in the US. But that nuke failed to launch, and Windows Phone's share stuck at around one percent.
Microsoft later announced that the Nokia Lumia line would never be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 from Windows 7.5, as we had suspected, sealing the phones' fate. Windows Phone sat at less than one percent at the beginning of the year, according to StatCounter, and is at roughly one and a quarter percent 28 weeks later.
Small though that uptick may be, it could be enough to overtake BlackBerry OS, if Windows Phone can maintain its paltry growth. Microsoft is set to release Windows Phone 8 this fall, likely along with a new range of handsets, meaning it could surpass BlackBerry's install base even sooner.Toodeurep likes this.08-20-12 09:51 AMLike 1 - This is quite predictable already... we are entering the transition phase from BBOS to BB10. It is expected that people will hold out.
Another perspective is the iPhone 5 anticipation, which slowed down the market. Either way, Late 2012 - Early 2013 will be very exciting. We shall see a bloodbath of mobile platforms08-20-12 10:06 AMLike 0 - This is quite predictable already... we are entering the transition phase from BBOS to BB10. I am not going to take your word on this. Seems to me like Windows phone has been poised to breakout for years now. I will wait to see...

Keep in mind BlackBerry is a damaged brand. A lot of people do not want BB-branded hardware. Even I with a Storm2 and an early PlayBook, I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. Wait to be an early adopter (again?) of vaporware platform, or purchase less than stellar BB7 hardware. I like high end phones.
Just to confirm im no RIM hater, Bridge was a stroke of genius. But boy did they fall from grace when it comes to feature phones. BB10 is not out of the woods just yet, with very average app selection at best, and a bad reference (BB/RIM) to begin with.Last edited by kingbernie06511; 08-20-12 at 10:48 AM.

Do you know WHY Windows is attacked by Malware so much? It basically runs not only personal lives, but also businesses. Being able to infect such a large number at one time makes the most sense. Same goes for Android malware, and why iOS is starting to now get hit more. The more popular something is, the more it is going to get attacked.08-20-12 10:45 AMLike 8 - I don't go to WPCentral forum but browsing around the Net I notice how people keep complaining about BB's lack of ecosystem - few apps. But WP ecosystem is pretty lacking as well - also few apps, yet I don't hear the hords condemning it. (Also, like how people complained about BB battery life but tolerate iPhone's short battery life.) Interesting...
Whether WP8 will surpass BB or not will truly show early next year when all the (equal) players are placed on the chessboard.
I suspect that WP8 release this fall will be somewhat muted with the same launching of iPhone 5 (and continual release of Samsung Galaxy) - not quite a good position for WP, imho.08-20-12 10:47 AMLike 0 - Here's the original article from WMPoweruser.
More by virtue of Blackberrys plummeting market share than amazing Windows Phone growth, it seems the installed base of Windows Phone is set to overtake that of Blackberry in US by the end of November 2012 (around week 47).
The projection is based on extrapolating StatCounter web usage data from the beginning of the year, and would mean there would be more Windows Phones in the wild in USA than Blackberries.
The launch of a new range of Windows Phones in October or November in USA is likely to accelerate the trend, cementing Windows Phone as the (very minor) third player in USA.
It would still leave Windows Phones as a pretty rare sight in USA, with less than 2 in 100 smartphone users using Windows Phone handsets.
A lot of BlackBerry users still have OS6 and older devices. The native BlackBerry browser on those devices is pretty terrible. I used Opera Mini more than the native browser of my 9000 and 9700.
I do use IE more now.
Still, it is impossible to know if there really are more Windows Phone users, or if Windows Phone users just browse more than BlackBerry users.08-20-12 11:02 AMLike 0 - I don't go to WPCentral forum but browsing around the Net I notice how people keep complaining about BB's lack of ecosystem - few apps. Many are jumping ship because BB has the oldest, most dated phone lineup right now, perfect for picking up the scraps of every other phone platform. Throw in delayed BB10 hardware, no BB10-compatible BB7 phones, a bad RIM reputation, mediocre app selection, and you have the perfect recipe for a huge chunk of current RIM clients jumping ship. Even small/med size business have a contingency plan to run non-RIM hardware in enterprise.

Not sure if you take hints easily, but I have 2 RIM devices, I am a RIM customer, and im not sure I would add a third device right now, despite being in dire need of an upgrade. The vast majority of smartphone users around me (hint: potential RIM customers) tell me not to buy a BB. So as I said, im stuck between a rock and a hard place.08-20-12 12:01 PMLike 0 - I'm using a Lumia 800 as my daily driver these days, and i honestly think that they have better quality apps available compared to BBOS at the moment. PlayBook apps is in a slightly better shape with more quality apps available, but there are still catching up to do. Right now, a lot of apps in appworld was designed for OS5 devices, and haven't been updated for years.
Though i'm not saying that WP marketplace is perfect. Take Zinio for example, iOS, Android and BB. But not even a whiff of news for WP. Pixelmags, coming to BB10 too, on iOS and Android, but no news on WP.
Its still a very tight race right now imo. I could still get things done faster on my BB, but the Lumia 800 is able to do slightly more things to be honest. Frankly, right now I'm just jumping between WP and BB while waiting for BB10 to be released.08-20-12 12:06 PMLike 0 - I never considered BB10 vaporware until the latest round of delays. The BB10 demos from 2-3 mo ago were emulated. RIM said BB10 was a brand new platform, but it still is not available for sale.

Sorry if im blunt. I have been very critical of RIM for 3y cuz it was obvious that they were on a bad, fully predictable collision course. But I never owned an iphone or android..... big RIM supporter deep down.08-20-12 12:08 PMLike 0 - Many are hoping to see a fully featured MS Office on future Windows Phones and Tablets. Just that one feature (if it comes), could really boost Microsoft's footprint in the mobile landscape. For a "professional grade" tablet the PlayBook has been kind of a let down. Doc to Go & the Adobe Reader are both VERY limited in what they can do, and the Email Apps is way to basic. Unless RIM is in the process of revamping all of their apps along with the OS.....
Office 2013 RT for Windows RT tablets will ship as Preview, lack macros and other features | The Verge
To optimize for Windows RT, Microsoft has made the decision to remove a number of features from its Office 2013 RT release to ensure battery life and reliability are not impacted on tablet devices. Macros, third-party add-ins, and VBA support will all be dropped from the Office 2013 RT edition, and one source says a "small number" of other features have also been removed. We'll have to wait for Microsoft to detail all of its changes, but although a spokesperson says the company has "not finalized any packaging," we understand that Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview will come preinstalled on all Windows RT devices.app_Developer likes this.08-20-12 12:23 PMLike 1
