I'm pretty sure your missing Windows NT.

@OP, not sure why they're calling the new windows os 10, just hope it's good.

In that case, Windows 10 is the correct nomenclature? As it would be the tenth OS, not counting 8.1 (which is more of a service pack).

You are forgetting Windows 1.0, 2.0, and 2.1.

This is Windows internal version 6.4, hence the "10". Windows 8.1 was 6.3, Windows 8 was 6.2, and Windows 7 was 6.1. At least that's how I understand it.

NT was a "Pro" version (like 2000), whereas ME (Millennium Edition) was a consumer product, based on legacy (DOS) / '98.

With XP, the two lines got united, XP is based on NT ("New Technology). XP Home / XP Professional

Hope I got it right. :-)

    Gotta love your QDOS...

A friend of mine works at Microsoft Call Center and she said Windows 8.1 is technically Windows 9.

When is windows 10 on the way. I just bought a surface pro 3 **** is way better than my PlayBook. Of course it is,the PlayBook is hella old. It's a very capable machine. Does what I need my only gripe is windows 8.1, I just can't get to jiggy with it. Some of the features I can see BlackBerry doing on a phone that's about 6 inches and a 12.5 inch tab.

As much fun as I'm having reading all the great posts in this thread, I'll just go ahead and put the nail in the coffin

I remember reading that they went to 10 because of coding issues that would arise if they went to 9. I just pulled this from an article... "The developer explains that at this point, there are lots of software solutions out there that check for "Windows 9*" on the target computer, and since this syntax uses a wildcard, the operating system might be identified as an older one."

    What do I win?!?

You're all forgetting another potential reason for the Windows 10 name: legacy enterprise apps. There are still plenty of large organisations running applications built a long time ago with coding for Windows 95 and 98 shortened to Windows 9 or Win9. Try pulling that kind of programme on an OS called Windows 9 and you're just looking at stability issues galore.

Also, all versions of Windows from XP forward are built off of NT and the internal name is just the NT version so Windows 7 is just NT version 6.1, and Windows 8.1 is NT version 6.3. The Windows 7 name came partially from it being the seventh Windows OS variant and partially from its release year of 2007.
