i want to buy my mom a new cellphone for her bday (not a blackberry^)

she currently has a CDMA LG flip phone from telus (no sim card) and i want to buy her a cheap android phone not something expensive but the antenna bands for the phone are GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900

if i unlock the phone and make it work on telus's GSM network and buy a sim card, will they keep her phone number? or will she have to change her phone number?

If the phone you're looking at does not have 3G bands, it will not work on Telus. Telus does not have a GSM 2G network, and those are 2G bands you've listed.

You definitely won't get 3G on it. No question. This phone doesn't have Telus' bands.

I say that you won't get 2G either, as Telus does not have a legacy GSM network.

Perhaps a Canadian/person more familiar with the Telus network could shed more light here and correct me.

Look for any phones with 3G bands for Telus/Bell/Rogers, or even AT&T. The bands are 850 MHz and 1900 Mhz (2 and 5)

Oni, you're Canadian...am I correct in my understanding that Telus lacks a 2G GSM network, so therefore the other Big 2 networks' phones are not backwards compatible?

You can't use a CDMA line on a GSM phone.
Unlocked Blackberry can be used as a GSM device with sim cards and not with CDMA carriers.

So does this all mean that you can't use a BB Style on the Rogers network as well???

The Style is wayyyy out of question on Rogers. Rogers=GSM. Style=CDMA.

Another issue is service books. When I took my Tour over to T-Mobile, it would have to register itself every time I rebooted, and I would get an email that it had received the service books. I put up with the messages until a switched to a 9700. Plus, a CMDA device is going to primarily search for its home network (although you may be able to manually set it to just use the GSM radio). If it is constantly searching for a CDMA network, that will drain the battery a lot faster.

There are a few World Phones with both CDMA and GSM radios, but it is better just to look at getting one that uses the local/primary network.
