It's an interesting concept, and as someone who is on the Verizon network looking to buy a smartphone (like the Tour) this is pretty big news.
I will definitely wait on buying a card like this, though; the last thing I need is to spend all the money on the card and the phone just to have an OS update block it's usage, or have the thing fry the internal hardware.
I would think it wouldn't work though, as wifi isn't built in to the Tour OS. Would require drivers to be installed. Maybe it would come with an app for the BB OS to use it?
I wonder if the memory card can still store stuff. I personally would rather have a micro sd slot over wifi.
I couldn't agree more... storage is definitely more important to me than wifi connectivity. That being said, if this card can also store data, then I'll probably be first in line to buy one.
It says it comes with an integrated antenna. How good could an antenna integrated into a MicroSD card be? It's kind of small, isn't it?
That's what she said...
No in all seriousness, I had an SDIO WiFi card for my Treo, it worked ok but then the lack of storage made it fairly useless, especially since I stored many apps on my SD card. The reception was mediocre but chances are if you have a smartphone and you want WiFi you're not going to be too far from the access point. It's not like you're going to be testing the limits of wireless-G's distance limit...
SanDisk made an SDIO card that also had 128 or 256MBs of memory. They didn't keep it on the market too long and you can only get them now used for ridiculous amounts of money. There's actually virtually no trace they ever existed on SanDisk's website which is odd. Maybe it was a massive debacle of a failure.... that would have me worried to say the least.
But if the card doesn't contain at LEAST 2GB of memory with at LEAST a higher end 4GB option it will be useless.
Oh and of course it has to work.
(and She said that too ok sorry couldn't help myself)
EDIT: Actually there's already a microSDIO WiFi card available from Spectre, the SDW-823 but it's only compatible with WM phones and it looks like it's longer than a standard microSD card so it may not fit in a Tour... not to mention Specter would have to put out drivers for the thing for BBerry OS which is unlikely.
