Just wondering why wireless doesnt work until the WIFI icon goes white... I know its trying to connect to blackberry infrastructure.. But WHY? It sees my wireless as it says it on the main screen, but i have to wait for ages for it to find blackberry infrastructure.

It should connect immediately, do you have the WEP key entered if it is necessary?

I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's looking for RIM's infrastructure. I know at the very least BES support shifts to route over the WiFi link instead of the 3G network. That happens after the WiFi link comes up. Your phone has to initiate a negotiation with the MDS server involved (be it RIM's or your company's) to say "here I am, follow this path to get to me". I think that's what's going on between the SSID showing up on the home screen and the WiFi icon going white.

Summary: it takes time because it's doing things.
