If we are on a 3G network and BB bold has Wifi built it, what is Wifi used for? why is it important to have Wifi enabled? How does it benefit us BB bold users? I am with Rogers Wireless. I am on a data plan for like 500mega bytes a month. If i switch off Wifi will it matter or not because i am on 3G network already? Can someone explain to me please and thank you! i am a noob!!!

    thanks!

I find that I get much better speeds loading web pages etc using wifi rather than 3G. I guess it would also be useful if say you normally had poor 3G reception at home .

So reguardless what you use 3G or Wifi, you are still using up your data plan right?

No. WiFi data does not count against your monthly data plan. Only cellular data counts.

Mbs is correct. Wifi will not count towards your data usage.

so say you disabled 3G network and leave Wifi enabled, this will not count towards your data plan and still have access to browsing on the internet, and uploading pictures, downloading videos, using youtube send/recieving emails, blackberry mesenger?

and the only thing you will not get by disabling 3G network is incoming and outgoing calls right?

    Is this all right?

Yes, completely right, but calls, SMS and MMS are disabled.

Besides blackberry messenger and push email, you can do all of those things even without a data plan...

Wifi is data only unless you have one of those Rogers Home Routers..
you shouldn't have to turn off 3G, at least that was the way my now gone iPhone worked.. if you connect to the wireless signal in the house, coffee shop etc, you can surf without data charges.

Turning off 3G may just default you to the Edge network.. not 100% sure. Still waiting on my Bold to show up!!

if you're not using wifi and relying on 3g, turn wifi OFF to conserve battery power. i rarely use wifi and only turn it on before i use it.
actually now i even run my BOLD on 2g only and only flip it to 2g/3g when i'm downloading or running pandora.

yes, turning off 3g brings you down to EDGE which greatly conserves battery power.

I don't think petahsumething meant turning 3G off in "mobile network", that'll indeed make the phone use EDGE.
I think he meant turning off the mobile network signal in "Manage Connections", which would make all data traffic go over WiFi...

    you right... options>manage connections>network

so your saying Wifi drains your battery? turn on wifi if your going to surf the web or email?

And yes having WiFi turned on all the time will increase battery usage. And WiFi will be faster than 3G (most of the time, depending on your network speed).

I guess until the people that don't have WiFi talk themselves into not feeling jealous. I just got back from traveling Asia and having an unlocked, WiFi enabled device was supreme.
