When connecting to a WiFi hotspot, how do I know if my internet is comming through the WiFI and not just through the mobile phone network?
I want to know this so that I am not racking up a huge bill overseas.
Thanks!

Go to network connections and turn off the mobile network, then turn on wifi.

Sounds good. Do you think I will be able to receive and send e-mails via messaging through the WiFi?
I got some news on the international wi fi use ... If you havent checked yet I would look at the charges for using wifi internationally on their networks. I hear they charge in some places where in the US its likely its always free in hotspots ... I would check with provider on info about that charges part ... but yes in theory it will work
No carrier charges apply when using Wi-Fi internationally...only whatever it costs to access the Wi-Fi Hotspot itself (like say, paying a hotel, coffee shop, etc for access)
aww thanks for clarity
Thanks. Usefull document all round.
Am I correct in thinking that on a cruise ship, i should turn off data and use SPRINT for texting. when off the ship and in a wifi place, turn off sprint and use wifi for email. would this really work without extra charges?
Also, does anyone know how much SPRINT charges for text messages on a cruise ship? What happends if my phone rings, but I don't answer it on a ship? Am I charged for roaming? Thanks much.
I wouldn't even touch my phone on a cruise out of fear of some crazy bill haha. I've only been on one cruise and I left my phone completely off the entire time on ship and at ports of call. I just didn't want to risk the charges. Most cruises have wifi but they usually want a ton of $ for that so I didn't even bother with that either. I figured I would enjoy my cruise and worry about home and texts and emails when I got back. Depending on the ship and where you are, your Sprint phone probably won't even work since its CDMA (unless you have a world phone with a sim card). One thing to look into (with the cruise line) I remember them mentioning something along the lines of having access to cell service on the ship through towers on the ship itself (not on land at ports). I think they may have had something like an Airave to allow CDMA to work. If I remember correctly, it also was expensive and I don't know what Sprint would have to say (or charge) about that. Another option you might want to ask Sprint about is if you have a laptop on the cruise and can access the Sprint website, you can log in to your account and send and receive free text messages that way as well (like an IM). But if you're in International waters, I'm not sure you will be able to access the Sprint website since some websites only work in the US, but I could be wrong... Good luck... I'm jealous and looking forward to my next cruise (hopefully soon!)
