If a Verizon BB Tour is unlocked, why will it work on any other network besides Verizon? I am new to the BB world, so be gentle. Thanks!

Verizon is a CDMA carrier like Sprint. They do not use SIM cards. AT&T and T Mobile are GSM carriers and use SIM cards. You cannot use a CDMA devise on GSM and visa versa, with the exception of the Verizon Storm, which has both the GSM and CDMA radios. Not sure about using a verizon device on another CDMA carrier.

Verizon Tour also has a SIM card and can be unlocked to use on GSM carriers.

CDMA would require flashing to use on another network, but the CDMA carriers will not accept devices that are flashed to be used on their networks. So you cannot use a VZW phone on Sprint. Sprint will not allow it.

I'll try to clarify one other issue some people are not fully aware of:

BlackBerry Tour 9630 has both a CDMA and GSM radio. There are carriers such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint, who use CDMA. Others like T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM. This means that in theory, the Tour is capable of operating in any carrier regardless of network type. In practice however, not. As has been stated here already, CDMA does not use a SIM card for identification, the information for identifying and authenticating with the network is instead stored directly in the phone itself. It is possible to flash information of another CDMA carrier on a phone in order to utilize it with a carrier it was originally not meant for. However, most CDMA carriers do not allow this. In other words even if Verizon Wireless and Sprint are both CDMA carriers, none allow the use of a phone for the other to work on theirs (no Sprint phone on Verizon Wireless' network and no Verizon Wireless phone on Sprint's network). When unlocking a device like the Tour, what is being unlocked is the GSM portion of the device. This will allow the device to accept almost any SIM card for use on most GSM carriers. Since both network technologies are separate, unlocking the GSM portion will not affect the CDMA portion of the device. In other words an unlocked Tour will still work on Verizon Wireless' CDMA network (provided the ESN/MEID is clear) as well as on most GSM carriers. Unlocking will not prohibit the CDMA portion to function. It should be noted though that many eBay sellers offer an unlocked Tour that will work on GSM, but there is no mention of CDMA. There is reason to believe that these devices are stolen and therefore blacklisted for Verizon Wireless' (or Sprint's) CDMA network. The GSM portion however will function fine as it is separate from the CDMA portion. Always be careful when buying from eBay.
