Is there a way for Google maps to actually chnage direction instructions as you drive by the point?

Like you have a number of directions to start. As you pass each direction point my google maps stays stuck on the same direction which would be 1. , unless I manually change it

Because it's not turn-by-turn navigation. The GPS interaction is only there to help you get a quick pinpoint of your location for local searches and your starting point when you need directions.

Yep. That's the way it works.

I'm guessing Google doesn't want to license the patents involved in turn-by-turn guidance. So they provide step-by-step guidance with a manual advance, just like BB Maps does.

I tried using Google maps on a trip recently. Restarting the directions from "where I am" had me so confused I had to stop and ask someone where the heck I was and how to get where I was going. Google Maps certainly has it's uses but trying to get turn by turn nav ain't one of them.

I made that same mistake. To make matters worse, I was in Maui, Hawaii. For those of you who have never been to Maui the street names are all about 15 syllables long and a lot of them look really similar to the untrained eye. I had to look at the BB screen, then look at the street sign, then look back at the BB screen, then look back at the street sign, then look back at the BB screen...

After all that, I'd turn the wrong way about half the time - kept getting left and right mixed up because Google maps always puts North at the top of the screen even when you're traveling in a different direction. For turn-by-turn navigation devices the direction of travel is always at the top of the screen.

I got used to the streets after a couple days and finally was able to find my way around the island and I had a great time and would definitely go back. But I learned my lesson about the difference between a GPS turn-by-tun device and Google Maps.
