lol yeah they tried that method first and it didn't work.
I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason for this based on the mechanics of electronics and circuit boards. Because of the type of plug it is, (A/B or something funny) maybe it fits better there than on the bottom. Probably a question for a RIM engineer.
Thinking about it simply, it would be a pain in the *** if it was charging out the bottom and you were using it to message or browse etc. I think its better on the side because it keeps its out the way!

My curve will charge in the charging pod from Blackberry on the bottom. The mini usb port was originally intended for data transfer anyway not charging. That's what the charging pod is for.

Nope, is not a problem from the bottom. My iPhone, XV6700, Treo, etc were all from the bottom. I never had a probem with it, with the side I would get worried it would get caught and could snap off (NOT going to happen to us crackberrys).
Hmmmmm... I'm not sure the top is the perfect solution either. Sometimes I'm charging it while I'm talking on it. The charge cord would come out the top and make it top heavy... If it were at the bottom, this wouldn't be a problem. As it is, mine charges on the left of the phone, which seems perfect if you are right-handed holding it to your right ear. Not that I want to debate the issue... I'm not a phone designer, I just play one on TV. LOL :-)
I charge my phone through the USB cable when I'm transferring files or with the travel charger...I've never been a dock person because I'm always using the phone while it's charging. I think the side port is a great spot, because I usually interlock my fingers behind the phone when texting/emailing/browsing with my Curve and my pinkies usually rest on the bottom of the phone. Personally, I would be very uncomfortable if the cables connected at the bottom of the phone.
I don't have a problem with the side jack. However if it bothers you yo should look into getting a charging pod. I have one beside my bed and it works great--especially with the bedside mode

Does it really matters......really.
Top, bottom, sides....whatever...You use it to charge your phone and that's it.....if someone doesn't like it..then get another phone.

I don't think it is really that weird or a problem. In fact, I would worry more about the treo's bottom charger as they are smaller than a blackberry's. But again all my phone have been side-charged so maybe I am sue to it. I wouldn't like a bottom charger as i use my ring finger and pinky to balance my bb as my thumbs type.
Either way...if that is your only problem with your bb, you don't have a problem...
