Random thought crossed my mind. What if BlackBerry made a successor to the BlackBerry Music Gateway... perhaps a BlackBerry Media Gateway... a Miracast adapter made specifically for BlackBerry phones

why would they? You can already buy them for about $30 as it is. its not like BB can undercut them and you would be stupid to pay something like $50 when it would probably do less and than most dongles out there as it is.

I'd rather see a BlackBerry TV device that used some protocol that all the BB10 phones supported. Miracast from what I have been reading here sucks for movies, if it works at all. Do some proprietary magic like iPhone and Apple TV that allows everything to be transferred and make it more functional than a dongal/adapter. Add things like an external USB camera to turn your TV into a VTC.

Well, there's always the possibility that a first-party device could be optimized to work with BlackBerry 10 devices. From what I've seen Asus' Miracast dongle works well with Asus gear, very little latency. It doesn't have to undercut the price, just has to bring the performance above the baseline compared to an off the shelf product.

I may be wrong but apple tv is not based on or comparable to Miracast. It most likely uses wifi direct which is much quicker.

Miracast sucks for videos no matter the device. Use hdmi or dlna for video.

Apple uses Airplay. Proprietary, probably based on a standard but customized. Point is it just works, and many vendors license is to incorporate it into their devices. BlackBerry should go a similar route as it seams lately like "standards" seem to not work that well together. However a BlackBerry device talking to another BlackBerry device could use proprietary protocols and provide a better overall experience than trying to make two devices connect with "standards".

Can you please point me towards the $30 dongles? Quite a few of us have tried a variety of those only to find that they require "EZCast" software that is not available on BB10. Long threads have really only uncovered a couple of devices confirmed working, and those are not in the $30 range, or are large bulky devices. I'm not saying it's impossible, but they seem to be a little more elusive than I had hoped. I had to return mine to Amazon for refund because it will not work with my Z30 without EZCast. I was hoping for a small form factor type that could plug directly in, ideally powered by USB type cord - as I have that on the back of the TV available as well.

That's why when I saw this thread, I actually found the idea appealing - removing the crap-shoot of finding one that works properly with our device.
Take a look - inquiries in the few Miracast threads here on Crackberry are yielding quite a limited selection of working devices - and plenty NOT working.

I'm still hoping to buy one, and I will (again) when I get one in the $30 range, and of the former factor I desire.

I've got the more expensive net gear

It works great. I stream YouTube for hours at a time and it hiccups a few times here and there, but overall it works amazing.

I have it in the basement up in the floor joists. It goes to hdmi #3 in my stereo and it works beautifully through my stereo. I have the usb plugged into my computer which is always on, for the power source

Anyways, I love it, I don't use it all the time, as I have an HTPC than does a lot of that grunt work, but it's fun to show off the blackberry through the big screen, sans wires!

i guess i cant say for sure if they work with BB10 but if they dont that seems like a BB10 problem and not the dongle fault. Most probably work with android devices and such. I know amazon and ebay are filled with cheap ones I assume some would have to work with most devices, bb10 isnt most devices though i guess.

I'll tell you the problem. Most of those cheap devices you are seeing all over ebay and Amazon are inexpensive Asian supplied products that are all pretty much built on the same template. They use EZCast to make things "Easier" and more fancy - probably without even a thought about the small market that has a Miracast capable device, but not one with EZCast support. The sad part is, the device itself would most probably work with our Z30, if only they would allow the device to start in Miracast mode, instead of forcing you to select Miracast through the EZCast client software.

It's really not BlackBerry's fault. Our BB's can connect to any standards-based Miracast device that is watching for a Miracast connection. The cheap devices chose to force the use of third party software that is available on most, but not all platforms. Maybe BB could develop some little EZCast plug-in for our devices that could allow us to interact and turn the right switches on the host device - that I'm not sure of.
