Boost dumped support for 8330 Curve and won't provide service. I want to keep this model because I like the raised key board - any help?

Can't you just get a standard BIS subscription? I wasn't aware that BIS subscriptions were specific to specific models.

Nothing easier. Please check that the local operators have service BIS, which could activate. If you have a problem with it please tell us more details about your location.

8330 is CDMA and Boost is part of Sprint, so you can't just hop onto another network while keeping your phone. Either find a GSM Curve 8300 and worry about BIS plans and EDGE with AT&T/T-Mobile/some other GSM provider, or get a different phone.

Good reason to upgrade and get with the times.

Having a Curve in 2016 is like having a rotary phone with a party line in 1996.

I respect the man for still wanting to use the Curve 8330. He sticks with what works.

Except without carrier support, it doesn't work.

In fairness, it's a bit of an artificially manufactured problem. Why won't they support it, does it require any special effort on their part? I thought this was about BIS, if so then don't they just need to forward his phone's internet traffic to a BB server and that's it?

    Lol. Pwned.

But as the guy above said, there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

BIS has to be run at the carrier level - that's how it was engineered to work. But carriers are starting to shut down BIS, because the number of users has fallen to a point where it isn't worth maintaining support. Obviously without BIS, a BBOS phone isn't going to work.

Worse, the OP's phone was on Boost, which is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) of Sprint, and uses Sprint's weird CDMA network. Such phones can't be moved to other US carriers, and since Sprint doesn't support BIS anymore, all Sprint and Sprint MVNO BBOS phones are effectively dead. Had it been, say, an AT&T phone, it might have been able to be moved to T-Mo for a little while, but T-Mo is also ending support for BIS soon (or did they already? I forget).

There have been at least a dozen carriers worldwide who have dropped BIS already, and that number will continue to go up. BIS costs the carriers money to support, and without enough users to justify that cost, the carriers are motivated to decommission it. Carriers are also decommissioning 2G networks and switching those frequencies over to LTE, which also breaks most older BBOS phones. The reality is that BBOS has very little time left, no matter what BB does, because they're heavily reliant on the carriers, and the carriers are moving on.
