So with BlackBerry OS 10.3 being leaked, I began to wonder: Who is Responsible for OS Leaks and Why do They do it? I'm just curious and I have some immediate postulates:

1. They are leaked by BlackBerry's R&D or Quality team to secretly get feedback from a larger sample of BlackBerry users
2. Enthusiastic BlackBerry employees go against protocol and leak these Operating Systems just for the sheer desire of sharing it with other BlackBerry enthusiasts
3. A rogue BlackBerry employee (or rogue employees) leak the OSes to a friend, who gives it another friend, who gives it to another friend, who gives it to another friend, who uploads it to a website where CrackBerry users and others can get it.

If anyone is more knowledgeable as to why OS builds are leaked, I would love to hear your take. I would love to hear any other plausible theories.

(please don't say things like a BlackBerry research monkey stole a banana with an SD card inside it that contains the OS files; the monkey eats the bananas and defecates where the SD card is mixed in with fecal matter and a traveler steps in monkey poo, realizes an SD card is on the bottom of his shoe, picks it out, goes home and tries it and realizes that a BlackBerry OS is contained therein.)

Im more inclined to believe its an employee who secretly "leaks" the OS so a mass number of people can "beta test" it.

On a serious note though, isn't it curious? I am sure BlackBerry would love to know if they are not authorizing it.... Javid Goazalov said it's best if it's left unanswered, and he is possibly right because that might lead to a clamp down on leaked OSes (which we would all hate) but many of us would love to know.

Yes, very curious! Either it's known by BB Management and we're being used as high-level beta testers, or it's someone or several someone's on the OS team letting it slip for the same reason. . . to get preliminary feedback on the design/operation of the next iteration (or they just want to share the wealth ).

I like the idea that they are purposely leaking to certain CB Members to get a feel for and test the OS and get free feedback as well as workarounds. There is no doubt that this is an invaluable tool when it comes to BlackBerry's development of new software.

Who better to test the software than willing fanatics. Free feedback, free opinions and free solutions.

I have personally enjoyed being part of the leak train and hope it continues well into the future for BlackBerry and all of us.

I suspect the vast majority of leaks are from carriers or others outside BlackBerry who have access for various reasons. Would be really surprised to hear that somebody at BlackBerry was intentionally releasing them, as it would be automatic grounds for dismissal, if not worse.

I say they do this to get free Alpha and Beta testing. A larger group of people providing the feedback is much better than having only 5 to 15 people internally testing the thing. Also this way the developers can't say "user error", "miss understood", "not reproducible" ....... and all the other crappy excuse that the development team can come up with.
This allows the team to make choices of what changes were good and which ones are just stupid. Take the red color around the os which replaced the blue or removing the area around the icons.

I strongly doubt that most bbry managers have even heard of Crackberry never mind consider it a source of testing.
Most R&D groups have many young, bright, enthusiasts - and security is never as tight as it could /should be.
Just guessing though...
