It's going to be impossible to beat whatsapp if BBM continues with PIN only option...Give people option those who like PIN let then use PIN and those who prefer to use Phone Number let then use phone Number.
These are staggering numbers... I want BBM to be successful but I am convinced that BBM Pin will turn out to be BBM's biggest enemy.
It's a simple fix that BlackBerry could do before it's too late.

My purpose of this post is to engage an active discussion so that we are paying attention to competitions strengths.. I am a BBM fan myself and would love to see it be a massive success.

Do a Google on it..there CEO is quoting it....Numbers make sense...as soon as you add a contact it becomes a whatsapp user and you are very likely to engage with them then trying to find BBM PIN for someone

Lol what your talking is nonsense, the other contact must have whatsapp to count, and let me hear what's a good reason for phone # over pin?

Clearly I am taking non sense....what about 100m users in last 4 months...or 450 active users...run by 40 people and no marketing budget...Thats a non sence.
If most of your friends are on whatsapp you are very likely to convince others to be on whatsapp and once you add your whatsapp contact list is increasing every single day without any effort...but it's all non sence...going around asking people for thier PIN is the best way...

Whatsapp might give you an option to link up to contacts that have whatsapp installed but with BBM you can be selective.

Quality over quantity. It's not as intrusive.

if you have a good product, people will come over. Whatsapp is ok but I don't think it's better than bbm due to the way it connects .

Does whatsapp plan to add voice and video chat? Short term the numbers are with whatsapp but people often dismiss user experience.

It doesn't have to match users by phone numbers and brute force a list of 'friends' because bbm will exponentially grow though people adding other friends eg word of mouth, email, social media.

You really expect an educated discussion to happen? On Crackberry? Whilst saying a competitions offering is better?

As said by myself and many before, having the privacy and ability to add "casual" contacts without giving them a phone number is extremely advantageous. If it so happens that I no longer wish to communicate with any contact, I can simply delete them and they cannot get back in contact with me or harass me. I don't know the phone number of many on my list and they don't know mine. Also, being able to pick and choose who I have on my BBM contacts is of value as opposed to just sweeping my contact directory and adding them. Many don't want everyone in their contacts to be BBM contacts.

BBM can't worry about whatsapp size too much, they need to worry about how people feel while using their service. I don't think the main reason that many pins were added was because it uses a phone number vs a pin especially when the BBM team has made it very easy to share your pin to your friends through facebook and twitter.

That's just a initial bump...if they can 5 million every month now than that will be great

The companies and people who acknowledge their competitors strengths always come out strong and those who don't end up like Blockbuster, Birders, Circuit City to name a few...
There's nothing to loose to give people by default option of adding by phone.

[dryly] It proves nothing of the sort. First off, we don't know whether these 100M users are "active" users or not. Secondly, it's probably the power of network effects.

It's unclear to me that BBM will be able to overtake Whatsapp unless it offers clear and unambiguous advantages over alternatives on Android and iOS in a stable and extremely usable manner.

Look I would love BBM to beat crappy out of whatsapp but by not giving default option to add by phone they are shooting themselves in the head.
Whatsapp success speaks for itself....Learn from thier success and improvise.

Technically, I'm still a whatsapp user even though I deleted the app long time ago ... Same goes for millions of people out there... Their phone numbers are in the system even though they don't use it anymore ... Since people don't delete their # from the system, they are counted towards the overall count ...
