In the options, the browser can be configured as "Internet" or "WiFi". Interestingly enough, the second option prevents it from working on my access point at work. I'm using BB8820 4.2, but I suspect this issue relates to other devices and versions.

Any ideas? What is the difference between these two modes?

Thank you so much! This in fact explains the behavior I observed.

I just wish RIM didn't make our lives more difficult than they need to be by locking traffic to their servers as opposed to bona fide TCP arrangement. This is getting old.
