This earnings call is Chen's self-imposed deadline for the hardware unit - what do you think he will do?

If so, it only highlights Chen's incompetence as an executive. The DTEK 50 was just released. Shutting down the hardware unit immediately after that would be pretty silly.

However, I expect that it is coming.

If sales figures look bad he will shift the goalposts and make it sound as if the future looks good for hardware.

Like yourself, those of us who are long time BlackBerry users, get cynical when the company promises that anything is coming.

Chen doesn't need to close Hardware... it would be bad publicity and a formal closure announcement would be unnecessary anyway. The hardware division exists in name only already given the DTEK50 as a re-badged Idol with BB Apps. So BB is already out of Hardware IMO, and I don't expect to see a BB-designed phone appear in the future.

Unless specifically asked, Chen will not mention hardware because Blackberry is now mainly a software company that does a little hardware.

I will go out on a limb and say he will announce that the hardware division has reached profitability. It’s a significantly declining share of their business, but with the number of devices in production tiny, and having outsourced the production, I think there is a chance it is nominally profitable. There is no way they pull the plug entirely on hardware, not yet anyways.

What about the Rome? There is no existing pkb reference design that they can work off of. It will have to be BlackBerry's device.

    Does the Rome exist?

    Where do I buy one?

AFAIK, It's a "planned" device.... much like OS10.3.3 is a "planned" update.

Which plan will happen first I wonder?

Well, the Neon/Hamburg and Argon rumours proved true. I suspect the Mercury will be as well - particularly since BlackBerry actually made many official references to it.

I think DTEK50 has been a mild success so far. Something they'll definitely at least break even on. So it's a victory and they won't have to shut down hardware.

Don't think the hardware division is going to be shut down at this time. If it was the leaked DTEK60 info would have never been processed in the first place. The DTEK50 seems to be doing alright and I think the 60 will add to the momentum. True that BlackBerry has become a software company but I think hardware will have it's spot in the future.
