In the corner of my Pearl where the reception bars are, there are often arrows pointing in opposite directions when the phone is idle. What are they for?
What kind of data? From or to my carrier? From or to RIM?

It could be a number of things. Apps that you have running in the background updating info, the phone itself, etc. Your data connection is always on even if the browser isn't open, just like your broadband connection on your home computer.
