Clearly, something is wrong with your Email setup. I suspect GS88 is on the right track.
Run the Email Setup Wizard and select BIS unless you are trying to connect to a Corporate Email server.

There should be an email settings icon, looks like an envelope with a gear on it.

The Icon is called Setup Wizard. The setting is at step 7 of 8.
The options are: I want ot use a work email account with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or I want to skip email setup.
The default is BES, you have to select Skip Email at this stage.
Once it has been entered, you can change it from the Setup Wizard under Email Setup.
After you make that change, use the Email Setup Wizard to create or edit your accounts.

There is a positive side to the CDMA carriers having tight control over their phones, everybody has to have a data package.
