Since it was a team of hundreds that worked on the OS and on BB10 that followed, where do you want to start?

Most that were let go only a few years later all went to Apple and Google.

The actual work stayed in the BlackBerry servers as it retains the proprietary QNX kernel and supporting system. All still under BlackBerry legal copyright control and corporate ownership.

Just what do you think a former employee can provide without getting in legal jeopardy?

By the time you removed all of the proprietary code, that open source OS would be two useless lines of code.

You might get the originating AOSP 2.3 that was forked to create the built-in Android runtime. But that's about it.

Comparing Playbook/BB10 with Amiga/Gateway outcome, idk if contracting with Dan Dodge might turn out so productive. Lol

What would Dan Dodge have to do with it?

PlayBook is just a generic tablet from a decade ago... had good speakers, but beyond that it wasn't special.

PBOS is made using QNX a proprietary OS owned by BlackBerry... components of which are still in use and thus not going to see the light of Open Source.

Best anyone could hope for is a unlocking tool to release the PlayBook bootloader from the limitation of PBOS.... What what version of Android would run on that generation of hardware and who would bother to make a workable Android ROM??? Likly wouldn't make much difference.

Reality is a FIRE Tablet would be much better hardware, less trouble.

??? Is OP's goal to "contract" with original "creator" of PBOS' QNX? If so, Dan Dodge has as much "to do with" QNX conception AND "contracting" as anyone. imo.

I don't have my iOS handy so I'm not going to Google from this TP, but would be shocked if the Amiga-QNX failure of late 90's isn't out there. Incomplete and overschedule BB10 suffered significant similarities with how Amiga QNX turned out. Afaik. Common factor? Dan.

As you say, opening up qnx, even pb, is NOT happening. So... Moot point.

Dan Dodge would be pointless to contact seeing he left 6+ years ago and works for Apple now.

Yep. ALL of them are long gone and/or "prohibited", afaik. That said, who might better fit OP criteria of pbos qnx "creator"?

Btw, did OP mean "contract"? Or "contact" ?

If you want the playbook look and feel you could probably build a UI and the necessary Apps on top of another platform like Linux. Still a gargantuan effort and could still run into patent issues. But would it be worth it? Is the playbook really any better than the tablets out there today?

Well, three legged stool frequently proves most stable...

Elon gets things done, at least. Dan, in contrast, just missed the mark at least twice...

But how much does he want to invest in software, and doe he want apps to work? BB10 vs ASOP..... He'd be better off using the same version of Linux his cars have than trying to use BB10.

I hope he means the company....

That probable would have been best for everyone. No wasted time on BB10, we all would have embraced iOS or Android sooner. And more likly another OEM would have stepped in to offer a PKB option back in the 2010-2012 time frame. No guarantee they'd still be offering it today... but maybe?
