    BBX turned into BlackBerry 10.

    Pretty much this

There was also talk that BlackBerry 7 would be supported with a new release. Therefore 8.

We know now that's not going to happen but 7 will still have a good few years of support.

Something other companies would have quickly killed off.

BBX used a roman numeral for 10. I think we can still call it BBX if we wanted to even though it's branded as BB10.

But you're right about not getting too hung up on version numbers. Sometimes they make sense, sometimes... not so much.
    Yep!
Winamp went from 2 to 5.

They added 2 and their not so popular 3 to make 5

Then windows numbering system is a hit strange but windows blogs put it's into perspective even though the build number was 6.1

Chrome makes a mockery of major version releases.

Didn't windows go from Windows 97 to Windows 2000. Why is no one asking what happened to versions 98 to 1999.

Not all companies release software names numerically.

Actually it was from Windows 98 to Windows 2000, but you do make a valid point. Companies skip software version numbers all the time.

    Yep!

    Vista 6.0
    Windows "7" 6.1
    Windows "8" 6.2
.... (all 6.x for compatibility reasons)

I like the idea of jumping from BBOS7 to BB10. And what a difference in aesthetics.

This probably makes the most sense, but still... It just seems really odd to skip numbers like that for the sole reason of having some connection to the letter X. It would make way more logical sense to just go to the next generation number, plus, it probably wouldn't leave people wondering "where's BB8 & BB9?"
It's mainly because that BlackBerry 10 is not an upgrade of any previous software, it is a brand new software.

BlackBerry 7 couldn't really be upgraded anymore. So, instead of upgrading, they bought a new software called QNX, and then they built on top of that.

The BlackBerry Bold 9720 is somewhat a hybrid of OS 7 and BB10...they could release that type of updates for the other devices but I personally think they should move on from the old platform and focus on QNX.
