Quick question here. On the forums, I hear a lot about people and their BB7 and BB10 device, but I never hear about the BB8 or BB9 devices. Was that the Torch that I vaguely remember or some other devices that I don't remember? Even in the earning report (that I didn't read fully, but got the jist of) mentioned that BB7 outsells BB10, but no mention of BB8.

Has Blackberry made 2 different, I'm assuming failed, OSes and now they no longer sell them?

I couldn't image a company just skipping numbers for no apparent reason. Can you guys please inform me? Thanks in advance.

Originally the QNX platform basis for BlackBerry 10 was called BBX, but, due to copyright claims they couldn't use the moniker.

So, they changed it from BBX to BlackBerry10 making the BBOS version numbers go from 7 to 10, skipping 8 and 9.

This probably makes the most sense, but still... It just seems really odd to skip numbers like that for the sole reason of having some connection to the letter X. It would make way more logical sense to just go to the next generation number, plus, it probably wouldn't leave people wondering "where's BB8 & BB9?"

BlackBerry 10 is such an improvement from BlackBerry OS 7 that it is secretly internally called BlackBerry 8 9 10

I don't really know. I think it's like a poster above said. The name BBX got them licensing issues and since 'X' is used as 10, they decided to go with 10.

No, the poster above is correct. They announced intentions to release their new BBX platform without crossing their t's and dotting their i's.

Another company had BBX trademarked. Not only was it a software company, but iirc they had even done business before either QNX or RIM.

So they were "clever"... since X is the Roman numeral for 10, BBX turned into BB10.

Rumor has it that 8 was to run apple apps directly without side loading but the engineers were laughing too hard that they just forgot about 9. Oh, I'm also a French model.

The BlackBerry 10 platform was released, which negated the necessity of developing BBOS 8 and 9.

Some folks say 7 is really (or was supposed to originally be) 6.1. So I wouldn't get too hung up on the logic of the numbers. Part of it is marketing driven.

At any rate, it separates BlackBerry as far as possible from BB7. Many current customers think that's a good idea. For others, they have no idea that BlackBerry has moved on from BB7. Press articles still show BB7 phones when writing about current BlackBerry affairs.

4.6/4.7 should have been 5.0, so it all equals out in the end.

But you're right about not getting too hung up on version numbers. Sometimes they make sense, sometimes... not so much.

BB10 devices are a new generation of BlackBerry's. BBOS is old legacy devices. BBOS 5, 6, 7 are OS types while BB10 is the device followed by its OS type i.e BB10 OS 10.0, 10.1, 10.1.0, 10.2, etc.

This discossion is kinda lame but you do realise people outside of this forum think OS 7 is very oldfashioned 3 years are eons for tech. Spoke to some foreigners just a month ago Americans actually. Showd them my Z10 their response was wow dindn't know blackberry went down that road.

The jump from 7 to ten puts emphasis on change, That BB 10 is different from os 7
