It is in the upper right hand corner of my bold. it is circular with an arrow pointing down left and a red asterisk in the upp right hand corner.

Any ideas? please help

That means you have an update in App World. Go into your message list and you will see it as a message as well. Delete it out of your message list to get rid of the icon.
