I once read that it was to somehow replicate the buttons that RIM had on their beepers before. Can't remember where I read it though

Here's a picture of their old beeper. Notice how the buttons are alike the logo.

Edit: buttons Q,W,A,S,D,Z,X. Once you see the pattern, it's hard not to notice after.

Entities and companies' logos are meant to reflect attitudes, goals, spirits, manners, or beliefs in one simple logo. It can be a true fact that logos can be more concise & efficient than words in carrying & delivering meaning. Therefore, each entity and company uses logos to express its very core values or its main message without having to write words. Logos are mere artistic work, and they can be beheld in different ways. Thus, unless an entity or a company declares the implied meanings of its own logo, inferring logos' meanings, depends on how creative a beholder's mind is and to what extent he/she understands the company. As for Blackberry's logo, I could infer few meanings:

    The dots-like shapes reflect:

    1- The flow of data.
2- Continuous work & improvement (Research in Motion, yes?).
    3- A phone's numbers-buttons (connectivity).
4- A cute blackberry fruit (the beauty of designs, and the sweetness/ joy of usage).
5- The half-squares & half circles reflect preciseness & ease. Additionally, they reflect a progressive direction > to the right.
    6 - Apps.

There can be more meanings implied in the unequal distribution of the aforementioned dots-like shapes (two on each side & three in the middle. Two up and two down). Probably something related to pivotality or/and the different tastes and types/classes of customers/competitors.

The Blackberry logo used to mean you owned a serious communication device and where a professional. I still remember when I had my @blackberry.net email address back in the day.

Now when you mention Blackberry, the typical response is "nobody uses those anymore" or they are out of business, sad times for the once iconic brand.
