Where's the evidence that bb10 exists as a real functioning OS beyond some canned demos?

The alpha devices. I have one. Many others do as well.

But now I don't believe there is some magical finished version of it in the oven. I think the phones we got in May really are the current state of the OS. Or very close to it.

Dude. You are not supposed to ask relevant questions. Just believe what RIM says.

Most probably, it doesn't. We were shown nice prerecorded mockups (which not only RIM does btw) or some kind of a demo app.

Otherwise, how do you explain the Developer Alpha that doesn't run the real BB10 (even an alpha version)? It's just a PBOS build. Shouldn't developers be getting something that at least resembles BB10 final product to actually make apps use the new functionality that was demoed?

    There are a couple differences.

    - WP8 will be able to run WP7 apps.

    - There will be tons of apps for WP8 when it's released due to a huge developer support of the Windows ecosystem.
I was saying the current win7 phones will not be getting win8. So that had to slow lumia sales I would think.

Sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about app compatibility of BB10 vs WP8.

i really and truly cant understand it, how is it that apple, android and windows have programmers and engineers available that can craft a decent attractive os and have it ready, and for Rim they seem to be having a major problem with this, are they understaffed in the programmer level? like do they not have any brilliant designers leading their teams that can carry them? i really dont get it, from apple released the 3gs rim shouldve released an os and phone to compare to it. i remember seeing the storm and thought finally rim can compete with the iphone in terms of flair, but no it was halfbaked, i feel like this is the same thing thats gonna happen again

Just imagine if RIM had released a qnx phone when they released playbook. That combo would have been a world beater but you can't turn back time.

It may be that talks are progressing for a buyer, and RIM is forced to postpone launch of new software and hardware until the new owner has its name and marketing capabilities in place. Or, if they have a new partner just around the corner, the partner will want a piece of the new action, instead of just inheriting the old BlackBerry stuff.

Having said that, I will stay with BlackBerry until their phones no longer function.

Question, if the BB10 was suppose to be released this fall with the latest and greatest (hardware and software), will people consider it 'outdated' in Q1 2013?

I'm confident RIM can hold out till BB10 release. . .what happens after that is a matter of how great BB10 will be. . .the competition is only getting more money and more things to offer consumers. . .What else is left for RIM to give that no other device has??? BBM? LOL. . .this is where innovators are made and BB10 better be magnitudes of innovation or it simply won't matter. . .

It sounded like the delay of BB10 is really a software issue so I'm hoping a 2013 release means 2013 hardware (whatever that will be). . .

but a few months ago they said it was delayed due to hardware LTE chips they needed, but those are now available. so they have a new excuse, software, which was their excuse last year when they said bb10 would be released feb 2012.

Being a BlackBerry user waiting on the sidelines to see how it all plays out, I have to admit I (personally) feel the jig is up on RIM.

Fact is, the odds were stacked already when BB10 was pushed back till later this year, as it meant directly competing with iOS5, Android 4.1 ("Jelly Bean") AND WP8 (I'm not entirely sure of the planned release date on this year, someone can correct me here).

Now, as mentioned before, RIM is going to miss the crucial holiday season upgrades and OS7 is going to have to tie those remaining die-hard users for 1.5 years.

Perhaps the final saving grace for RIM would be external assistance, in the form of a partnership or licensing agreement, as RIM simply cannot survive in a post-BB10 world with Apple, Google, Microsoft (and other potential players).

RIM should maybe look to leveraging its high Service and Software divisions' margins to add value (though I'm not entirely sure how, perhaps JPM and RBCCM could look more into this), or as a alternative business model; as mentioned before, the proprietary BlackBerry infrastructure network is a powerful asset. RIM could transition into a software service provider, perhaps specialising in mobile enterprise security etc etc...to the extent of my limited knowledge, the transition could be similar to IBM's transformation (as in, "hardware" to "software" not consultancy!). However, the company would be substantially smaller, operating as a specialist firm in a niche area. I have no idea as to what the ascribed valuation would be there.

In addition, let's bear in mind though these highly profitable segments are also at risk, especially BES with the BYOD movement and others slowly encroaching upon the mobile enterprise sector (I see MSFT as a huge threat in this space).

Just my thoughts, would love to get some feedback

What are the chances Rim will last to release OS10?

    Zero.

You would have to be the most foolish person to believe anything with RIM has changed.

This is a sad testament. The Dev Alpha is our "savior"???? It has a web browser.
RIM has been blowing smoke up our 's long enough.
And to think I just posted a comment about everyone cracking back on RIM.
I'm not cracking back...I'm just done

Prior to today, I thought that BB10 would basically be RIM's Pre. Now I think it's probably RIM's Pre 3. We might see BB10 hardware in some form, although who knows when, but I'm expecting it's availability and shelf life to be pretty limited. RIM now has *months* ahead of it with no new devices on the horizon, and if Bb10 sees the light of day, it'll be competing with the next gen iPhone, whatever the Android OEMs dream up, and Microsoft's practically unlimited resources.

Exactly. In Q1 2013, the current gen specs (quad cores, 2 GB RAM, HD screen) will be old gen specs. Not to mention new android os and iOS would be up by then. People still believing BB10 will be any relevant to androids or an iphone are delusional.

    1. Don't listen to the media. They don't predict the full truth.
    2. RIM is still turning a profit...it is just less than last year
    3. BlackBerry is still number 1 nearly everywhere except North America.

Last as "RIM"? Or "what are the chances OS10 will see the light of day"?

RIM may not remain RIM due to a possible buyout but OS10 will be released. RIM aren't going out of business in the next 9 months if that's the implication.
