"Volkswagen has announced that its newly formed infotainment division will take over BlackBerry's European research-and-development facility.

The troubled smartphone maker's Bochum, Germany center will serve as the VW's development headquarters for future infotainment development and other forms of vehicle connectivity, such as car-to-car communication and interaction with road infrastructure.

"Connectivity will be a key feature of the car of the future. Many customers are expecting connected vehicles of a new dimension in terms of convenience and road safety," said VW development executive Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser. "In order to be able to meet these challenges it is necessary for us to broaden and expand our options through additional know-how."

The company was one of several automakers to join the Open Automotive Alliance, a Google-led consortium that is managing Android integration in vehicles.

Most competitors are embracing both Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay technology, alongside independent infotainment interfaces that don't require a smartphone to be connected. VW has not yet confirmed plans to participate in the initial CarPlay launch, however."

Can't see how it makes a difference who buys it. If I bought the BlackBerry building in Halifax and turned it into a night club, BlackBerry isn't going to care lol. They've collected the money from the sale and moved on. Plus, VW is planning on keeping the employees.

Exactly. BlackBerry working together with Volkswagen would have been far more interesting. But perhaps two great companies together does not necessarily mean increased value.
