Yes, the tone you get when you have a voicemail is actually the SMS text message tone set in your phone profile. So, just goto: Profiles, Advanced, Normal, SMS Text, and then set the RingTone for it. Done.
Are you sure about that? My understanding is that the SMS notification is the same as the Voicemail notification sound because the notification you get for a Voicemail is a text message being sent to your phone.

Does it made a difference if I have a curve? I thought the voice mail was a different sound that sms. Cause my sms and voice mail have 2 different sounds right now. My text message sound is borrat and when I get a voice mail it doesn't play that.

Hmmm... maybe.. I don't have a Curve, so maybe someone else can chime in here.
Yes, the VM and SMS ringtones will be the same no matter what.
The OP's berry is weird and they should return it and get a replacement.
Kidding. But yeah...maybe the ringtone you THINK is for SMS is actually for something else...like maybe MMS....? I dunno, but sounds like your settings may be a little off.
