Unlocking a telus 9550 to rogers. after the unlock will it have the Old Telus CDMA number, or the rogers sim number?

If you unlock your phone, can't you have your old number ported over to the new network? I know that's how things work here in the states. Forgive my ignorance of my Northern cousins. I'm not sure how your carriers operate.
