This article goes into detail explaining UMA.

Personally, I notice a huge difference in UMA vs. EDGE. I can't compare it to 3G but, it's plenty fast.

    Good find, a definitive answer.

Short version, Wifi in support of UMA provides a second data path. That data is transported over your network at your expense. The carrier benefits because they offload capacity, the user benefits through higher bandwidth and increased signal strength.

Marketing it is a little tougher. T-Mobile USA does the best job. Unlimited national calling and unlimited data.

Rogers markets the unlimited national calling, but still counts the data against your contract. They also discriminate international IP address, restricting use to Canada.

Orange UK markets it for Quality of Service. No breaks on the voice or data.

Hmmm, interesting, had no idea Rogers restricts it to Canada internet locations. One of the main reasons I am even still with Tmobile is for the Cheap BB international plan and the UMA calling I can use in Mexico when I am there, otherwise I would seriously be looking elsewhere do to a lack of 3G.
