Is GPS a power drain, and if so can it be turned off? I assume it is a power drain since it has to be looking for satellites all the time, is turning to 911 reduce the drain ?

I've read in another post that it should be off. But I wanted to know if you have GPS on, but BB Maps off, is the phone still looking for satellites and therefore killing the battery?

The iphone does something like this. if you leave the service on, its constantly running. Not as battery hungry as actually having maps open, but it drains fast.

Well, BB Maps doesn't automatically seek satellites until you tell it to, even if you already have GPS turned on. So, I am inclined to think that the GPS isn't draining any power unless you're running an app that uses it. That being said, if you have a GPS app running in the background and still receiving sat signals (like, say, BB Maps), then it's definitely draining power.

I've actually had my GPS turn on all day, for the first time today and it doesn't seem to be draining the battery any faster.

I agree. I turned the Location On last night, and it doesn't seem to be draining any quicker than when I had it off. Just make sure you are exit out of your applications so they are not working in the background with the GPS.

I have been ignoring it so far, but i am still left wondering if it is still fired up in the background. If there is no way to turn it off then this is a moot point. Turning satelites on in BBerry maps could be telling the app to do the math to figure out where you are, or it could be firing up the GPS circuits. I think it is the former because it is fast
