Is it possible to replace an 8900 trackball with the trackpads that are avilable for the 9700 or the new curve? Or is it completly out of the question?

If you know how the underlying hardware works at circuit level, are handy with electronics and have access to a lab for producing a hardware based adapter, I see nothing standing in the way.

sure, other than the fact that the OS for the device (only produced by RIM) doesnt support the logic/algorithms needed to run a trackpad nor any adaptor. do you really think some kind of adaptor will fit or be able to be adopted into the housing??

guess hes gonna have to add a RIM software developer to his list of needed items to custom make him an OS for his device too.
