Push the trackball down and hold it while moving it in all directions. Sometimes that will dislodge whatever that is stuck.

Yes- a friend of mine here @ work just got his replaced Friday because of this reason.

Anyone confirm (taken apart, etc..?) that it was something lodged when it's 'floating' rather than 'stuck', or was the problem the board below?

It's probably the microswitch under the trackball that is dirty or defective.

Check out the guide linked in BigBadWulf's post in the first post:

If your BB is less than 1 year old, now would be a good time to exchange it under warranty, before you try anything more drastic.

Does the Bold use the dome still? Unfamiliar with that layout, haven't played around with one.

I think the Bold still uses the dome. Should be an easy fix if you're comfortable with taking the phone apart.

It will only work if the microswitch is serviceable by cleaning. If the switch is beyond repair, replacing the dome won't fix the problem. Taking things apart voids any warranty, that's why I suggested getting a warranty replacement if that is an option.
