Tour Delayed Indefinitely
JUNE 12, 2009 (United Press International) Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie announced totay that to finance his new infatuation with the NHL Phoenix Coyotes, and to address critics concerns about plummeting quality in the company's BlackBerry devices, a major product lineup revamp will be announced this Monday. While providing no specifics, Balsillie did mention the upcoming Tour and the Storm replacements have been immediately delayed, while a partnership agreement with another company, most likely Microsoft, is worked out.
The news may cause some rumblings within the BlackBerry faithful who were hoping the Tour, codenamed Niagara, would make up for the disasterous launches of past flagship BlackBerrys like Storm and Bold. The surprise level may not be too great, as rumors have been widespread that RIM has been experiencing development issues with the Tour and it has been delayed several times already.
Delays and possible product lineup changes, cancellations and additions will be reviewed with an eye on returning the company products to their core qualities. Basillie did hint at a possible abandonment of the consumer market.
Research In Motion stock fell after the announcement, but it is unclear what will happen at the market close.
