Hopefully some of you experts can help. I'm with T-Mobile and have been for years. I travel non-stop internationally with my job. I have a Blackberry Bold and have the unlimited worldwide email access plan. When I'm overseas, I don't use my Blackberry for ANYTHING over than emails.

So I always have the same amount of bills each month except this current bill. All of a sudden when I was in Canada last month I have a TON of "internet access" charges. Some as many as 30 times a day.

I haven't downloaded any new programs, I don't have wireless synchronization on my calendars, etc. When I called T-Mobile the representative said that I must have some synchronization on. I told her I don't and told her to look at all the previous months worth of bills while I'm abroad to see that this has never happened. I don't even open the browser when abroad.

I'm cutting and pasting just 1 day on my bill and you can see just how many charges I'm being billed. There was 57 pages worth of these! You can see the data isn't much for each one but the end of the month there was a ton so I got charged.

T-Mobile said they would investigate it but can any of you figure out what program could be causing this? Thanks so much!

No but I haven't added any new programs at all. I haven't changed any settings at all. In fact before this trip I was in South America and didn't have this problem.

Also, another question is T-Mobile said that until I figure it out I could turn off Data Services but put while roaming Yes. They said since I have the international blackberry plan that way no data would go through. But then I asked her if I turned off Data Services...how in the heck would emails still come through??? She still tried telling me emails would come through yet everything else would be blocked.

Is that true?? Doesn't seem to make sense.

Yeah, I'm here in the USA at home now and tested it. When I turn off data services no emails come in.

I'm still curious what program is causing this "internet services". I don't use anything except emails with my blackberry.

The phone is keeping a series of low-usage data sessions active, waiting for email to be pushed. These sessions tend to be 10 to 15 minutes in length.

Make a list of all the apps you have on your phone, you only have unlimited email plan, not a complete data plan so any other internet access would be chargeable.
Gmail contacts and calendar sync for example will not qualify for that i think.

Oh, if you're on OS5 check your browser bookmarks, they can be set to refresh periodically.

Thanks for the tips. But I've done nothing different from the past few months. I don't even open any browser window when I'm abroad. I also don't use any apps while traveling abroad (only when I'm in the USA).

Mister Xiado... Your explanation sounds the best when you say, "The phone is keeping a series of low-usage data sessions active, waiting for email to be pushed. These sessions tend to be 10 to 15 minutes in length".

My question is....is there any way to prevent it from doing that? And why is it doing that now as opposed to never doing it before? And why so many times per day?

Just because you're not using an app it doesn't mean it doesn't do something in the backgroud, example Facebook, Twitter BBM updates from friends etc. Do you have any browser bookmarks?

    Hi guys,

No, I don't have any browser bookmarks at all. I don't even use my blackberry internet browser when traveling internationally. I don't use Facebook or any other applications. I have Worldmate on my blackberry but I have it set to never update so I wouldn't think it would be doing anything.

The only programs I have in applications are:

    BerryBuzz
    Color ID
Daily Finance (but I don't use it when I'm traveling internationally)
    Dictionary and Thesaurus
    Pandora (I don't use it)
    Quick Launch
    Shazam (I don't use it)
    Slacker (I don't use it)
The Weather Channel (I don't use it)
    Worldmate

Those are the only programs. I have emails set up from my work email, AOL, Yahoo and Gmail email addresses. But I've always had those on my blackberry and never produced charges like this.

    Hey guys,

Just now I looked down at my Blackberry and I noticed something different and never seen it before. I noticed my Icon on my WorldMate 4.0 app that I happen to have on my Blackberry main screen had a yellow download arrow next to the icon. I've NEVER seen that before in the many years that I've had WorldMate.

Could this be causing it? I have my Worldmate set so that it will NOT automatically update but could it still be causing it to connect? Anyone have this App and familiar with the program?

You have two types of access logged. RIM is probably the expected low level handshake to maintain contact for BES, and the occasional email push. The more frequent Internet access is likely to be polling activity by an application. Try Worldmate which has several live update features which may run in background.

I think you found the culprit. Why not try the official Blackberry Travel app instead.

Yeah, I'll try deleting the Worldmate App. I still don't use any of the Live features. I've always just used it for many years and never had issues or problems but I've never seen that yellow arrow before so that probably is it.

    Thanks for the helpful comments.

I'll check out the Blackberry Travel App. Thanks again.
