General rant of BBM.

I have come to notice the inconsistencies with BBM are starting to become too much.
Not just for myself, but my family and friends that I also have on my contact list.
The ads in both the invites and chat list are becoming unnecessary. Personally since I own a Priv, I rarely see these ads as I don't ever have a reason to go into the BBM app itself. However, the majority of my contacts are on other Android devices. Which means these ads are a repeat thing day in and day out for them.
Next to the ads, there are other little nitpick things that it just doesn't BBM is interested in ever changing/ improving.

Which brings me to the next step. What would be a viable option for a replacement for BBM? I am really curious about the Google Allo Messenger coming out, and as a few of my contacts have already said, if that app doesn't have ads in the contact list, then consider it switched.

Really this rant doesn't solve anything, more just frustration with what was once one of the best messaging platforms to be used, and is now instead a half baked attempt to keep people connected....

Try the BB10 version. There's no such thing as ads in my chats with anyone, ever, regardless of the other side is using a BB10 or any other OS.

And for some reason, the video and voice calls between BB10 devices are getting more and more stable and stronger. I often do video calls via BBM with my wife--I'm on a Z30, she's using a Z10. Usually I had to rely on LINE. But now, not anymore.

I hear ya, I have moved on from BB10, and have purchased the protected service via BlackBerry Enterprise store, no ads, or you can subscribe to their no ads service via subscription in respective playstore. Google will advertise to you other ways, but BlackBerry has no other ways to monetize BBM.

I have mentioned time and again there are ways that BBM can earn money from the users without using advertisements and subscription and also no data mining as well unlike WhatsApp.

How do I propose this? Here is the summary again and I'm sure it will earn a lot more money than what BBM is currently earning :

1. Provide more free stickers as an advertisement for brands and the brands pay for these stickers.

2. Allow BBM Channels to sell things and pay for them directly using BBM money or PayPal

3. Sell music & video online by making it easy for people to purchase music & videos that their friends are listening to with just one click.

4. Promote games to be played between BBM users simultaneously. Games definitely come with money to purchase items for their games.

5. Sell subscription content pushed to users for a fee. These could be stock prices and movements, news contents, manga, novels, comic strips, even porn if you are able to verify the age of the user.

All these are content that people will gladly pay for as a service. This will also eliminate the pesky advertising as well & earn BBM a lot of money. Surely detractors & trolls will say why would anyone want to do this with BBM as there are no users. If we have confidence in BBM then we should do this if not then we might as well shut down BBM for good.

BlackBerry can afford it as they are still buying other companies with their billions of remaining cash. I especially like Loc22's music purchasing idea. It is fun to follow other BBM users playlists but it is a pain to buy a liked song on iTunes and then have to use Sync-My- iTunes app to put them on my Z30's microSD card. Sound is great, though, either with earphones or BT syncing to my car stereo. The Z30 is a mean music machine!

I don't see ads on the Legacy which I use everyday but when whatsapp dissappears I will be using FB Messenger more and believe it or not, when I use my iphone, Snapchat has probably one of the best Messengers that I ever saw. No ads, there is some news, etc (but be prepared to see a lot on Kim Khardashian and what she is up to haha.

Does anyone still use Viber or Line? I had those but have been relying on BBM and Whatsapp lately.

Another thing that is a bit disappointing about BBM is that even though I am using a Priv, it's still not baked into the OS as it should be.
You would think that since both are BlackBerry products, that they would work seemingly together.
However, I can't even quick reply with BBM like I can with text, can't quick compose/action a message through the Productivity Tab, etc.
I suspect that once this Allo app becomes available that it will have a little more functionality to it.

Yet another issue with BBM is that Glympse does not work correctly on Android. It works ok when sending your map to non-Android device. But when receiving maps on Android it will not track and auto center the map of the party who shared their location with you. One has to manually move the map to keep up.

Very annoying.

And the funny thing is that the Glympse app works just fine outside of BBM with none of the above issues. But broken within BBM.

I believe they already offer something similar #3 and 4 in some BBM markets (although point 4 sounds very similar to what they used to offer with Scoreloop). They do offer free sticker packs from time to time.

Have you worked out what it would cost to set up this infrastructure?

Quite a lot of what is suggested is already in place just not implemented widely only. Those not in place do not need much cost, just get the sales people on the ground to get the money in. It doesn't cost billions of dollars to hire people to get sales.

If it's plastered with too many offensive ads people will stop using it and they will lose money rather than make it.

BBM is shedding its user base quickly - even in Indonesia, where it was formerly a key part of daily life. I wouldn't count on any big investments in a dying service - that would be like a new paint job for the Titanic after it had struck the iceberg...

BB is doing exactly what they should do - move into markets where they can make new, innovative products, not try to prop up products that have already failed in the marketplace.

Yes, BBM still leads in Indonesia, but that lead, which used to be HUGE, has nearly been lost to growth in WhatsApp and Line. BBM's trend is down - worldwide, and that includes the former stronghold of Indonesia.

As for a replacement I am quite happy with BBM. And frankly, many of the people I have convinced to use BBM tell me they think it is a great chat device - simple, intuitive, secure and efficient. Not surprisingly, their only complaint is that only a handful of people like me use it . . . . They say, "if only more people used, then they would use it!. A bit of the chicken and egg syndrome.

What are you expecting from a messenger? There are no ads and the chat is instant. I dig how it also tells you when the person is typing and the sound isn't so alarming that you hit the ceiling if it's 4 am

You send one message and get a response and couple munutes later its gone. I expect to be able to go into a message app and check my chats whenever I please. Snapchat is a half baked attempt as clearly that's not their primary function. I don't worry about 4 am message on any messenger as well. My phone is always o. Priority for just phone calls from contacts.
