I've had a busy day outside of CrackBerry life, so I haven't followed every detail...

But I understand that technically we're not informed that Heins is let go, but will be stepping down as CEO and leaving Board of Directors.
So while it's probably a safe assumption, there's still a chance that he be assuming a position like COO or VP of something. IF that was teh case, I'm not sure how the whole "golden parachute" thing would work.

Blackberry needed someone younger and more enthusiastic. Heins sounded like he had no clue what was going on and was always so monotone. Even his hairstyle was out of date... What blackberry needs to do is get with the times. Get developers to get up off their *** and do some proper coding. Some of the same apps released on BB10 have less features then OS7. Does that make any sense at all? I hope chen will do a good job because if not my z10 (which i love) will be my last BB.

Oh rest assured Heins got at least the 22. Quite possibly more and quite possibly invisibly.

Indeed, it is a sad day for him....now he feels the bitter sting of the BB employee who has been let go.....or even the hourly worker, living paycheck to paycheck, below the poverty line, in some cases trying to support a family. Tears well up for me when I think of the hard times ahead for the Heins family. What to do?? Scramble out there, desperately looking for a job before ending up on the streets? Perhaps every morning down to Labor Unlimited to look for a day gig? Perhaps to take a cushy government or academic advisory position, requiring him to show up for a meeting once every couple of months? A board position from one of his big friends? Write a book? Or perhaps spend his days in luxury accommodation, yet in a personal agony, thinking over and over of the PB owners he lied to.....or the investors, or the bb10 owners.....yes, perhaps he will spend the remainder of his days on a personal quest to make things right for them. Retreating to the basement to work on that bb10 for pb build......while during the day: searching for the real killers of Brown and Goldman.

Only at the highest levels is that true though. The executives below the CEO level can just be told to pack their office and be gone, before security comes to escort them out.

Interesting reasoning. So BB was hopeless (glad you agree with that by the way), so it doesn't matter that Heins decisions were royal disasters....and therefore why complain if he is rewarded tens of millions.

I bet lots of people would like a job where nothing they do really matters and a several months later they get tens of millions.

The point of any severance package is that you get paid while you look for another job, and sometimes with a clause that says you can't sue for unlawful termination, so kind of like a liability insurance policy baked in.

The higher the position the higher the severance because it will take you longer to get another job, the highest of which is of course a CEO position. There was a high risk associated with this job because if the person failed to turn the company around (high probability), he would have a poor reputation and it would be hard to impossible to get another job of a similar level.

I think the assumption is you can make a random guy CEO and he should be grateful for the chance. But in reality if you want top talent with a proven track record you probably have to pay top dollar, which I don't think this is considered to be.

His radio silence and lack of communications highlights what a conman he is.
There are thousands of unemployed people who poured their heart into BlackBerry because of him, and he's walking away with millions.

Heins did make some mistakes, releasing the Z10 instead of the Q10 was a blunder--ignoring your user base to instead "compete" with a touch screen was a big kick in the nuts to the BB brand, should have stayed focus on the business side of things and released a "consumer" phone after the Q10. Instead the Z10 lukewarm reception basically killed acceptance of the Q10. Nice going. They should have anticipated that the Z10 wouldn't compete effectively, especially since marketing was zero.

And this is where I disagree with Chris Umiastowski: he believes BB had to layoff all these people to get lean and that's a good thing. Sure, a strategic layoff is good to get rid of duplication, but in this case I think BB laid off so many people that they don't have enough of a baseline to keep developing new hardware and software. So the BB we knew back then is gone, I don't know how they'll keep developing new and exciting handsets with so few people. Likely BB will become a service company, I don't know...
