Yesterday when my device was in my pocket and locked and it rubbed against my wallet and it made an emergency call. I hung up then I got a call back and I told them everything was alright. I don't want to disable the password.
When you hit emergency call it asks you again if you are sure you want to make an emergency call, and once you verify that you do, the call goes through.
Anyways I don't think there is anyway to remove it as its built into the OS and is a safety feature if you need help in a hurry.

The only way I can see to avoid this is by using a case with the sleeper magnet to put the phone to standby, which should deactivete the keyboard. Maybe it would also work if you go to standby mode manually (on the Bold, press the Mute key - not sure how its done on other models)
Yeah this was always a worry for me. It used to happen on my treo 680 but that was a touch screen. You just have to be careful and keep it in a case at least

Wow, what are the chances of the phone accidently dialing 911 when locked in your pocket? Or can an emergency call be placed easily in locked mode? How does it work?

I dialed 911 once accidentally while my phone was locked as well. I dont think you can get rid of that function because of its safety feature....just have to be careful

It only happens in password protected lock.
Pretty high probability if you don't force the phone to sleep/standby. Checking the behavior on my Bold with password lock (lock screen displayed) all I need to do is roll the ball to pop the emergency call dialog with 3 options. Which one is selected is down to luck as the ball rolls around some more, until there is enough pressure to click it...
There's a 1/3 (33%) chance the Emergency Call button will be the one selected when the ball gets a click, and we can only guess how long before that click happens. Lets say there's 1/4 (25%) chance you will not pull the phone from your pocket before it clicks - so the overall probability would be (0.33*0.25)=0.8 - that's 8% probability your car key will call 911 on each occasion it goes in your pocket.
Now make your own assessment of the risk for a click, the 33% probability is always the same (3 buttons on screen) so you can do the calculation and assess the probability you are going to get embarrassed. Its easier to get a proper case or pouch with a magnet.
Why not get the app autostandby, then after a specified period of time the phone automatically goes into standby, you then don't have to worry about it accidentally dialing

Will the hard standby button help you?
