It just seems like there is nothing they can do right now to rectify their erroneous past & present actions.
Is it really over?

Does seem like people are chanting their death knell, doesn't it?
Over as we know it or have known it...probably. That is, they will probably be out of hardware and likely out of the consumer arena for a long time if not for good.
The question yet to be resolved is what will BlackBerry be going forward? I really don't see a path to them returning to a market leader but there are avenues they can pursue that can maybe allow them to grow from here.
I think that when the 4 remaining bb10 models go end of life (which may be 3-6 months) then they will fade out of the handset business after taking more write downs. In fact the bbos 6 models may have a longer life overseas.
They will probably support bb10 for a while, upgrade development will be wound down as they shift remaining resources to focus on BES, MDM, BBM and services. Security is another area where they have skills and there is high demand wrt encryption.
That is just IMHO, but based on what I saw IBM do during my career with them.
As far as the US goes...as much as I hate to admit it ....NO (with a sad face) hope is dismal
With my Z10 becoming a "LOW END" Blackberry smartphone, I keep asking myself if its wise to invest in a "high end" Blackberry smartphone because of the current state of the company......NOPE, question answered
They could quite possibly in a few months have the largest most active mobile social network in the world. so yeah hope... is there.
They could. I'm not sure anymore by seeing this BBM launching
There's always "HOPE"........no matter how slim it may be
I think there's still hope. We need a massive turnaround though.
BlackBerry needs to fix BBM4ALL asap. And Price Z10 and Q5 smartphones competitively.
Market the hell out of these phones!

As much as i hate to say this I think blackberry as a company is finished there in a spiral of decline which is out of control.... The blackberry as we no it from the past is gone.
Massive operating losses stock pile of unused phones the company is in financial meltdown....
It's a disgrace that blackberry has been allowed to get into this state run into the ground by idiots getting millions of dollars in wages.
I just hope something can be pulled from the ashes but I'm not holding my breath.
By comments on this forum it's safe to say that even BlackBerry people are over the company.
I love BlackBerry phones but I've had enough. I'm not going to even bother trying to make excuses for them. They're done and the writing has been on the walls for months. We are just too loyal to see that!

An influx of big name apps and a clear, direct press release stating that they're not going anywhere could turn things around slowly. This would also let large corporations and businesses know that BB10 will be supported, so come get your Q10s, JP Morgan, dump your old Bolds right now.
Obviously a buyout by a big company and a clear, firm press release or even a commercial stating that they're committed to BlackBerry would let people know loud and clear that BlackBerry isn't going anywhere.
The main thing is apps though. Because without the big ones, very few people (other than diehard users) will care if BlackBerry is here for the longrun with a partner or not.
This BBM weekend was absolutely the worst thing that could have happened to BlackBerry, at absolutely the worst possible time. Like just after the announcement of layoffs and poor sales on Friday, I was like, "Christ. Could it get any worse?" And oh, did it ever!
As delusional as this may sound, I really don't think all hope is lost. Will they ever be Apple or Google? No way. They know that. But I do still think that major apps getting here by the holidays, the Z30 (not the craziest specs, but as good as many), and solid download numbers of cross platform BBM could show the world that BlackBerry isn't finished yet.
Going private would help this all, because they could do more behind closed doors without having to halt trading of shares to announce more bad news, then face the analysts and everyone's barrage of questions on the earnings calls.
So add me to the list of people who still thinks BlackBerry can still get it together, though obviously not overnight.

I hate to say it but I think your playing the lyre while Rome burns around you. At this point I don't really think there is anything they can do with regards to hardware.

while all companies go through ruff times it is possible for BB to get back onto track. The reason I think they are going to die is because the fact they are unable to work towards dates. They have careless management and are still failing to see consumer trends. Terrible marketing too. Their vision of mobile computing is just empty words

No new apps are coming. It'll stay just like it is now. Nobody is going to invest in a failed OS. That's what bb10 is now. The only hope for all of us is a licensing deal. Anything else and no more bbos for us.
These kind of things happen always due to leadership, change the leader to a good one and see the result. they are not able to collaborate with popular services/ apps, then why somebody will show respect, where ur device is costly too.
this is not a failed OS, in my experience it is very great OS and have nice features compare to android and others, it just lack apps in store and lack leadership in management.
Probably hard to fix the Bbm issue with a demoralized staff, of which 40% are probably not motivated bc they fear losing their job in a few

From a consumer standpoint, the failed launch of BBM for IOS and Android this past weekend was the worst possible thing that could have happened. Now you have folks who have left the BB platform not because they wanted to and where hoping to be able to reconnect with their BB contacts are left with another bad taste in their mouths.
I feel for the hard working folks at BB who have to live with the fact that they may be laid off and because the individuals at the top who have made millions of dollars in wages to drive the company into the ground and yet there are still people out there who support them? I am sorry to say this, but at this point in time their creditability is shot as far as I am concerned.
Myself and several of my colleagues who where eagerly awaiting the release of BBM for IOS to reconnect to our BB contacts and/or groups are again looking at the common excuse they have become famous for " coming soon", yeah.
This negativity is boring. This is no constructive thinking. I do not want to switch platform, so I hope we will still be able to use BB10 devices in the future.

Hope left the day Thorney entered the parking lot.
No it's not over. BlackBerry is still stumbling like they have been for the passed couple of years, but even with a failed BBM launch (Which I'll speak to in a moment) isn't enough to drive the last nail into BBRY's coffin. When a company restructures it's a long and crappy process, which a lot would view as a company going under, but I don't believe that's the case here.
With the BBM launch... I think we need to take this from another perspective. 1.1 MILLION people (on DAY 1 of cross platform) were either lucky enough to get on to the service or were too impatient to wait for the roll-out. That shows demand for this service. And that doesn't include all the iOS users who haven't been able to sign up yet because of the hold.
The pause on the rollout is partially BBRY's fault, I won't deny that. Though it should be noted that BBM service can handle millions and millions of users, but probably not all at once. Even Google Play would shut down with too much traffic all at once. This is the reason for the rolling release. The overload was caused by a leaked BBM for Android APK that allowed any android user to get the app on their phone... this is a vital difference between iOS and Android.
The App Store has no fake BBM apps either. Looking at Google Play this morning, there are 25 fake BBM apps as of about 7am. This displays a serious flaw in how GOOG runs their play store and I think should indicate to them that maybe they need to re-evaluate what they let in their store.
</BBM rant>
Back on topic: Until an official announcement is made, there is always hope.
Also my opinion 100%. There could be share swaps and ownership changes somewhere but I agree the market strategy will probably be almost exactly as you say. The only thing I would add is the possibility of continuing making, on a very limited scale, "pure" blackberry phones for the security freaks out there. Still, like you say, the wind down/go service strategy is certainly the most likely scenario, buyer or not.
Even if there is hope, any consumer that jumped on BB10 just got thrown to the wind. You can kiss any hope of decent apps goodbye, no developer is going to invest in this platform now that bb has officially said they're done with consumers.
