- Hello CrackBerry. I apologize if this post is in the wrong forum but I talk about both the Bold and the Storm in this one so I wasn't sure where to put it.
I am currently at AT&T using a Bold and I am considering switching to Verizon and picking up a Storm. So far I've had a great experience with the Bold. Here is my question. Being that I am a Bold user and I am used to a physical QWERTY keyboard, would I be better off with the Samsung Saga?
I am really intrigued by that large screen on the Storm but I hear some discouraging things about performance lag with the 4.7 OS and I hear that typing with the SurePress feature on the Storm is a chore. I am actually a BlackBerry convert. I am a member at xda-developers and in the past I've owned a HTC Wizard, Treo 750, HTC Kaiser, and I briefly owned a HTC Excalibur and a Samsung Epix. So I am very familiar with the WinMo OS and I know about it's instability etc. Other than the Excalibur and Epix (which stunk especially the Epix) I enjoyed all of those phones.
I am not a big talker so I have the smallest voice plan available. I regularly use the internet, SMS, and Instant Messaging, so I guess that would be my focus as far as usability goes. I've been doing research on theses two phones and I've found tons of conflicting reviews on both. So what do you guys think I should get?Last edited by AJM3RD; 06-23-09 at 08:20 PM.
06-23-09 08:09 PMLike 0 - Friends who tell me they want a Storm, I just reply "are you absolutely sure??". More often than not, I meet people who only complain about their Storm, vs the others who rave on and on about it, and if they see an iPhone, the bashing begins...
Therefore...just be sure that you really really want the Storm, because more often than not, the eccentricities of that device often causes headaches....06-23-09 08:12 PMLike 0 - If you have not used a Storm, I'd suggest going to a Verizon Wireless store to get the feel of one. I thought I wanted the Storm until I had a chance to use it in the store. I didn't like the feel of not typing using a qwerty keyboard.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com06-23-09 09:02 PMLike 0 - I advise you to wait till the Tour comes out on Verizon to make the change to Verizon.
The Tour will be more Bold-like than the Storm.06-23-09 09:27 PMLike 0 - Go into a Verizon store and play around with the Storm's screen and ask yourself if it will be something you could like/love. It is hard to go from a physical keyboard to a touchscreen but I have gotten use to my blackberry Storm and find it weird to use a physical QWERTY.06-24-09 03:22 AMLike 0
- Well thank you for all of the rapid responses.
I've played around with my boss's Storm for a while to get a feel for the typing. It doesn't seem too bad but I am sure that 15 minutes in the memo pad is not enough to judge the experience as far as long term usage is concerned.
I did experience some of that OS lag but he isn't really into upgrading OS's or anything like that so he is still running the shipped ROM from the initial release.
How is Opera Mini, Garmin and BeeJive on the updated VZW ROM? I installed Opera Mini at the store and it looked beautiful on that screen but I had trouble with some of the smaller check boxes on the settings page, specifically the mobile view checkbox. I checked and it was the old 4.7 ROM on the display model at the store. Also is the new VZW ROM the best ROM to use if I did get the Storm.06-24-09 05:21 AMLike 0 - oprea mini makes the storm very nice. What I can tell you is 2 things first...the saga kinda stinks slow and not very many native features, the omnia...wow you think the storm lags try to play with one of those... now I have a storm so sure Im a fanboy, but if you are used to winmo then you may want to look at some of the new HTC's coming out, Or wait until the tour is released. The storm is nice I love mine, and everyone I know except for one person(and they are somebody who shouldnt own anything more advanced than a razr) love theirs. I would also keep in mind that you have 30 days to try out the phone... Hope some of this was helpful06-24-09 05:34 AMLike 0
- I too had the bold and switched to the storm. It did take some getting used to but I really like my storm. I agree with the others about heading to the verizon store and checking one out. It is very different than the qwerty.06-24-09 05:40 AMLike 0
- I too recently made the switch from AT&T to VZW. I've been using a Bold since last November & also using an iPhone for a while too.
Prior to switching, I purchased a Blackberry Storm & unlocked it to work on AT&T's network. I did not care for the touch screen interface as it fails to compare to the iPhone's even though they are much different devices.
I have to admit that I really miss my Bold as I am now using a Curve 8330 on VZW's network. As far as the Storm, I guess it is just not for me but will consider the Tour when it is available.06-24-09 05:43 AMLike 0 - Well other than maybe the Touch HD which hasn't hit the US yet, I dont think I like the the new line of HTC devices. My wife has a HTC Fuze you know the AT&T version of the Touch Pro. I hate that the pixel density is so high on such a small screen. Opera Mini looks so tiny even on the largest font settings, and I'm not much of a Opera 9.5 fan. So I am going to take the negative comments I've heard about the Saga plus my past experience with the Epix and I'm going to run with it. I will probably just go with the Storm, and upgrade to 4.7.0.148. BB Storm here I come! Thanks to all of you for your help.06-24-09 10:05 PMLike 0
- I'd be more than happy to switch from AT&T to VZW if my contract was up and VZW unlocked the GPS functionality. I use GPS everyday for work to find my way to the next job site. Unlock GPS and I might even pay the ETF to switch.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com06-24-09 10:28 PMLike 0 - I believe that you can use programs like Garmin Mobile on Verizon BBs can't you? My friend has a curve and he can't use Amaze GPS but that is a free app so that may be why. Has anyone successfully used any of the pay GPS solutions on their Storm? I have Garmin on my Bold now and I plan to install it on my new device as well.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com06-24-09 10:51 PMLike 0 - I've been playing with a Storm since Friday and I must say I kinda miss my Curve. The larger screen is great for some things, but the virtual keyboard is a real drawback, IMO. It's not easy to type one-handed (especially while driving), compared to a Curve. Even with 2 hands, I find myself having to think about each letter of each word. The Curve is much more forgiving.
We were discussing the users that are requesting a Storm and my boss turns to us and says "Who wants one, do you?" As much as I wanted the cool new toy, I had to say "No" because I type much more than I do anything else on the device. Part of me said "did I just turn that down?", but I think I chose wisely.
The funny thing is that I find myself poking at the Curve screen for things like the OK button. I'd love to see a combo device with the qwerty style with a touch screen.06-24-09 11:24 PMLike 0 - DuviRetired ModeratorWhat's the reason for the need to change devices/carriers? If it's not for service, I'd say wait. If it's to get your gadget highs, then more power to you... everyone knows I get every gadget that is worth it.
P.S. I sold my Storm. I got a Bold and 3G/3GS now.06-25-09 01:25 AMLike 0 - Hello CrackBerry. I apologize if this post is in the wrong forum but I talk about both the Bold and the Storm in this one so I wasn't sure where to put it.

coming from a bold you may be sadly dissapointed with a storm..
you may want to consider a tour instead which is coming out farely soon and sits in the same category as the bold for cdma carriers..
more memory better camera..
no wi-fi though.06-25-09 02:00 AMLike 0 - 06-25-09 02:32 AMLike 0
- I am changing carriers/devices for a couple reasons. First my wife is out of contract with AT&T and she hates her Fuze. Secondly because of my job I get a 17% discount with hardware/bills and 25% off accessories at VZW, overall I'll be saving like $80 a month once I switch. Finally I want a new toy with Ev-Do Rev. A and a huge screen.
As far as the Tour goes, if I am that unhappy with my Storm I can return it and get the Tour once it's out. It will be released within my 30 days right?Last edited by AJM3RD; 06-25-09 at 05:10 AM.
06-25-09 05:05 AMLike 0 - Only if the Tour releases in mid-July. If they delay the release, you might have to return the Storm or get "stuck" with it. However, you wouldn't have a backup phone to fall back on if you return the Storm, so you would probably have to consider trading in for a Curve or 8830WE.06-25-09 05:36 AMLike 0
- Well I don't plan to make my purchase until 7/2/09. The Tour should be released before 8/2/09 right? But as you have suggested I will most likely research the Curve vs the 8830WE. AFAIK the Curve is generally the better phone between the two feature and performance wise but the 8830WE is better than most smartphones but it lacks a camera and adds an unlockable SIM slot with quadband voice but only 2G internet. Am I right?
Edit: I just did some of that research, I could have sworn that VZW had an 8900 but no neither of these phones are Rev. A capable, so I guess it'll be the Saga if the Storm=Fail. You know I'd hate to get to VZW and wish I never left AT&T. I hear that Rev. A is so much better than 3G HSDPA.

06-25-09 06:55 AMLike 0 - I've had my storm for about two weeks now and I love it.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com06-25-09 04:43 PMLike 0 - What didn't you like about the Epix? I only saw it briefly, but seemed pretty cool. I could never carry the Saga. It's just tooooo ugly. HTC Touch Pro seems good. I would wait for the Tour. Basically a CDMA bold, but smaller and a better camera and no wifi.06-25-09 05:14 PMLike 0
