Sprint and T-Mobile sitting in a (merger) tree?

Paying attention, Verizon and AT&T? You might have a new monster of a mobile company (with lots of Android offerings) to deal with if Deutsche Telekom can successfully navigate a deal to purchase Sprint Nextel via its American arm, T-Mobile USA.

After rumors of the German mobile giantís interest in swallowing up the on again, off again mobile carrier that is Sprint Nextel, shares of the Now Network Co. shot up 14 percent. The theoretical mobile entity, letís call it T-Sprint, would move past AT&T to become the second largest mobile carrier in the States.

However, there are plenty of eyebrow raising questions to be sorted out before this rumored merger could take place. First, would this help or hurt T-Mobile (a la Sprintís envelopment of Nextel)? More importantly, as things currently stand, Sprint and T-Mobile operate their own networks that rely, respectively, on entirely different technologies Ė so, how would the newly formed company integrate these independent platforms?

Finally, and itís a BIG finally, is there even any possibility that US regulators would approve such a merger? For now, all of us who use (or have investments in) Sprint or T-Mobile will just have to sit back and wait to see if there are any merits to this rumor.

*and thinks to self* i left sprint to go be with t-mobile and now they are following me.....

Read this yesterday, interesting idea, but disparate systems make strange bedfellows. A la Sprint/NexTel?

Sounds like as much potential for trouble as potential for success.

I just did the opposite and swithched from T-Mobile to Sprint. I didn't realize they would want me back so bad as to buy out Sprint or I would have just stayed with em.

That is the same thing i was thinking when i read that - I see the possibility for businesses and i see the phone choice getting massive - and due to all the existing cell towers and radios i see the signal being GREAT - but i also see sprints poopy customer service bleeding into T-Mobiles great customer service.

I don't see that happening if T-Mobile get ahold of Sprint. t-Mobile likes to keep things simple and effective.

It isn't so much T-Mobile buying Sprint, but their parent company. There is also talk of a T-Mobile UK and Orange merger happening in the UK.

this is just going to be a change in ownership, i feel that this german company just wants the name. by this i mean everything will stay the same, just have a new parent company. or the alternative. converting the world to gsm. world capabilities, and not having cdma period.

we will definatly have to wait and see.
