BlackBerry's Android phone could be a dual sim/boot and utilize the work/play functionality of their phones. When in work mode, BB10 can be utilized and when switching to play mode, fully accessible Android with Google Play Services can switch in for playing games and such.

The dual sim could help in the way that the companies can provide the employees with phone for work purposes but that same employee can get a separate sim card from carrier to use for the Play mode and be charged separately from the employer. From the friends and family that I know that use BlackBerry's for work is that they can't use the phone for pictures or apps and such and can't appreciate their phones for its full worth. This would be the best of both worlds.

Are sim cards designed to be switched out on a daily basis. This would seem to be a significant hardware failure point if someone's going to be doing that hundreds of times per year.

Don't think Googles OHA rules allow for dual booting devices.

Don't think the BB10 half would work as enterprise also wants Apps.

Don't think it would work as it would most likely be a LEAP or Classic grade device, and not too many consumers really want a device that cheap. Camera along with be a no go....

Don't think it would work, as most people would rather not have to turn it their phone if the quite or are fired.

If this some way saved consumers a lot of money, they might go for it. But other than the cost of the device, what would they save?

But that would be the beauty of the work dual sim card hardware. You wouldn't have to be switching out sim cards as the work and personal Sims can be inserted simultaneously. It would just be a matter of switching Work and Play profiles.

No BlackBerry bought that company that does the software SIMs.... not sure what they have done with it?

Plus there are current devices with dual SIMS.... they just aren't segregated by work and personal like BES provides with BALANCE. The OP is saying to combine the dual sim tech with Balance and make it two devices in one....

But I just don't see much of an advantage to the consumer in this case.

it does not really matter if BB run bb10, android, or ios...consumer and enterprise no longer want to own anything from this company. Sadly, it cannot be turned around like Palm and Nokia.

Hasn't the earnings call slammed the door on this - what do you think "we are moving $200 million from Hardware to software and IoT" told you what is going on hardware? ASP is going to go through the floor as we go sub-1,000,000 units a quarter.

There is just no way that BB10 development continues beyond minor refinements... of course we might be fine for a couple of years with BB10 "as is".

With their current device strategy it is clear that BlackBerry wants Hardware to die off. Release devices no one wants, and then say they can't keep it running. They just won't come out and say that because they would lose business customers. It's over. Chen pretty much stated it in the call. May as well leave when you can and get used to a platform running iOS or Android that BlackBerry will support.

I don't believe that BlackBerry "wants" hardware to die. But they are in a position where they can't compete on hardware, and they need to make more per device than even an Android OEM does... base on the low volume. So the Classic and the LEAP were most likely a smart move to keep them in hardware and provide devices that their customers (enterprise) would be able to utilize.

But yes they are making all the moves that a company in transition away from hardware would make.

I think the hardware of the phones, while not that great, isn't what is holding back sales. Bb10 is great but without the ability for a non-techie to get whatever app they want, the phone won't sell no matter how much advertising they do.

I sometimes wish you people would actually listen to what Chen is saying. From the beginning, he has said that he wanted balance revenue generation, ~40% BES, ~40% hardware and 20% software. Anyway you cut it, there is no replacing hardware revenues, end of story. Likewise, you don't buy a voice encryption and a multiple SIM company because your getting out of the hardware business. For now, BES and software (IoT) will remain Blackberry's priorities as there is money to be made. Just follow the Q1 release. This focus continues to build positive sentiment and the rest will follow. You can't rebuild Rome in a day.

He also said they're talking steps to make the hardware business profitable. No details is a bit frustrating.

Except now WebOS is actually alive and well. WebOS probably has more user than BB10 does at this point thanks to LG slapping it on their TVs.

True, but webOS is dead as a smartphone OS. It like saying BB10 is doing well because QNX is inside all those cars.

Not really. BB10 isn't QNX. BB10 is a terrible decision that was built on top of QNX. That would be like saying Linux is the world's most popular mobile OS because of Android.

WebOS on TVs is still just a modified version of WebOs from smartphones.

BlackBerry must take advances against ios 9 . Almost all new featues are allready in BBOS10 . They also can response big time about the news about an iphone withhout homebutton that must be launched in 2017. Apple is all about copy stuff and BlackBerrry could use these two items .

That is the fun part but!

First think BlackBerry Brand is Branded by the Media and haters.

So they must keep the Brand but must usea second brand with BBOS10 after they make a deal with one or two other players like samsung and HTC for example. It could help boost sales for BlackBerry. Why a second brand because QTEK did the same when they get a branded brand by the media and they changed there name in HTC.

They must also use free stuff and think about promotion for 64 GB free for every BlackBerry 10 mobile you buy. It means you get 80 GB with a BlackBerry Leap. Get operator active to get this on there webpage.

Also use better marketing and show you are on the move change the BlackBerry 10 into BlackBerry 11 like Apple does every year with nothing new , only copy other oses. Show that you grow.

I listen to him say he is moving major resources from hardware to software....

I listen to him say that they only sold 1.1 million devices in the quarter when the Passport had just been released on AT&T. The Classic should have been in full enterprise sales mode... and the LEAP made an brief appearance.

You can't rebuild Rome while it's still burning either. Especially if you are getting rid of all the workers.

Lots of outsourcing going on at BlackBerry for the hardware business. You'll probably see more hardware outsourcing in order for BlackBerry to stay nimble matching costs to demand for product. This may actually bode well for continued production of BlackBerry handsets.

That seems to be the plan. Move the hardware costs out of house and shorten turn around times of concept-to-manufacture.

I've wonders why they did this..... would seem like if Foxconn was building the Z3 that the LEAP would have been a natural fit. Moving it's production seemed strange to me.

Nimble with what? They showed that slider vaporware at MWC and we might see it by end of year, if it is even real at all. They have had this Foxconn deal in place since Chen came in and all they have from it are devices that are running the same internals as the ones before the deal. BlackBerry is releasing devices nobody wants, not even their existing BB10 customers. They have gone from 20,000 employees to a third or less than that and are still not nimble. Outsourcing low end hardware like they have done so far but charging twice what the competition does hasn't worked for them so far, so I see no reason why it will all of a sudden.
