I want to update to one of the 4.5 beta OS for my Blackberry 8830 WE. I've never updated to a beta OS. See all sorts of posts about not updating if you don't know how to do it but haven't found a good link to solid instructions on "how to".....Any help would be much appreciated!

Welcome to CB! Please do a search for the proper upgrade procedure. You will find detailed step by step instructions that should help you tremendously. However, it must be said that if you are unfamiliar with your device, it is not recommended that you jump right into upgrading your OS, especially a beta. Good luck.

I plan to try it on my 8830 as soon as I find a reliable enough source for the .exe.

I upgraded to .77 back over the summer and it's very easy. Download the .exe, run it, then when you open your desktop software again with your BB connected, it will give you the option to update your OS. Takes probably 10 minutes start to finish.
