Don't toss away your old Playbook's just yet RIM apparently has been secretly running Windows 8 on their devices with a little help from Microsoft. Speaking of Microsoft there is talk that Microsoft is seriously thinking of buying the crippled company giving them an edge to push their Windows 8 product to the rest of the world!

this has to be one of the most random posts in the history of random posts. Microsoft already has a partner for their Windows 8 production needs... and have already announced a tablet. Why would they off more of their OEMs to buy RIM and THEN retool an existing device? That makes zero sense, business or otherwise.

As random and unlikely as this post sounds, i would actually like the idea (of PlayBook running Windows 8 that is). I love both OS and i'm planing on buying a Surface, but if a PlayBook was able to support Windows 8, then dual booting would be just as easy, which is what i've done with every version of Windows 8 i've used.

This partnership idea....that is very unlikely to me, but i'm business specialist, we can only wait and see, i have a feeling BB10 and 2013 is gonna bring a whole bag of surprises for the BlackBerry brand

You would not get a dual boot solution with Microsoft, why would they want that? This has zero benefit to either company.

Well no, it doesn't benefit them, well not really. It is kinda a compromise with the Windows 8 and other Windows OS, once the device(with another OS on it) can run Windows, it can likely dual boot as well. And once the device has a paid version of Windows on it, they're satisfied.

the actual major block here would be if RIM (allowing windows to run on their device any at all) would allow us to dual boot. Dual booting is something that is controlled mostly by the hardware manufacturer.

Just buying the OS isnt going to be enough anymore, its the additional services and features that the companies want. Windows 8 is going to be a very cheap upgrade, Microsoft wants a piece of the application puzzle rather than just the OS. Dual booting would prove less than useful if you are just going to use QNX when you want and use their product a smaller percentage of the time. Not to mention allowing dual booting would open up a HOST of issues with security.

WOW! This is amazing. Can't wait. I also heard this adds the full PB swipe interface to Windows 8 and has the full Office suite running native and runs all XBOX games.

The Surface tablet launch was just a prototype and a ruse to help RIM and Microsoft keep this little secret hidden until it was ready.

Yes, thats why RIM would more than likely wouldnt allow it, but windows 8 on the other is victim of easy dual booting capabilities, and so far windows is not working much to secure or stop that.

Just because i hate saying "absolutely not", i'm gonna say highly unlikely. new Windows Phone 7 devices generally do not allow other OS such as Android. this make it even more difficult for PBos. Additionally, so far RIM has never release the details for PBos which would allow porting it to other devices.

    sooo...no

If RIM has moved away from ARM then I could see how Windows 8 would never be ported. However this video: suggests that MS has been porting Windows 8 to ARM; so technically if RIM is still using an ARM CPU its likely they have Windows 8 running on their device in their labs.

As far as MS buying RIM, at this point anything is possible. RIM might be a good company for MS to own, but lets just say that's the buzz going around some of the offices at RIM right now...MS is out to own them.

But we are not talking about running QNX on a Windows 8 tablet, we are talking about Windows 8 on the Playbook. The Playbook is what RIM secures and thus wouldnt allow another OS installed to dual boot.

Windows is porting Windows 8 to ARM because ARM owns the mobile computing and smartphone space. Why would RIM put Windows 8 on a Playbook when they are working to bring BB10 to market? Windows Phone is a sales failure, and nothing indicates that Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 running on a tablet will be a success either given Microsoft countless failures in the mobile space. I would say a more likely possibility is BB10 having the ability to run Windows 8 ARM apps, but even that I can't see happening.

QNX is also able to run on the x86 architecture so that is another option in your crazy fantasy lol
I don't care if Win8 comes to the PB, but right now I don't see the point, too much work needed to implement where a program could be used

If you want Windows 8 on your PB then use something like Splashtop...

    It's EXTREMELY easy to use...

You'll never get a dual boot option on the PB
