    Luckily she got it back.

I always run my devices fully encrypted, also picture password is pretty great to have!
Way easier than remembering a huge password/phrase.

Also password keeper is great to improve the security - when people don't want to remember those long phrases.

Did you find that encrypting the photos slowed down the device overall?

And would that micro SD card ever be able to be used on another device?

First, jail broken device are not allowed on most networks. They are detected and kicked out.

    Second [...]
First of all, monitoring a device through MDM/EMM is certainly a very important measure, but I would not assume that many companies or consumers are doing this.

According to my personal experience, which is certainly not representative, most SMEs seem to have no MDM in place, small NGOs or private persons certainly don't have it.

And then we should keep in mind that monitoring is only a mitigation.
Ideally, you don't want to have any infected device in your corporate network.

In case of iOS we had various kinds of malware in the wild like WireLurker, YiSpecter, XcodeGhost, AceDeceiver and (the most advanced) Pegasus.

And that although iOS has such a tiny market share compared to Android.

So, if you have an iPhone then you have an iPhone.

I have a BB10 and there is nothing in the wild attacking my phone.

And if you would be working for a NGO or be a member of a certain minority or otherwise an interesting target, then I would advise you to use a BB10 phone.
(I would advise against consumer BBM though, but Threema is working on BB10).

No, I don't really see any difference, works smoothly as ever.
If there is a slowing down then it's not that bad.

If you encrypt you SD-card you should always keep in mind that
it will only work with your device from that on.
Also if you reload the OS on you device, it won't be readable anymore.

Always decrypt it before doing anything or your data might be gone.

If that is too risky for you - there is a another solution:

Just encrypt your device only and not the SD-card.
If there is sensitive data move that data from your SD-card to your device (File Manager) and you are good.
You are still able to use your SD-card as you were used and sensitive data is protected.

It should be noted newer devices have better support for encryption, reducing overhead. For one, 64-bit ARMv8 CPUs (pretty much anything from the past year or two) have hardware cryptography instructions, making each crypto operation computationally more efficient.

Thanks guys. No I didn't bother encrypting the SD card I read a lot of stories, like you suggested, that there can be slowdowns on OLDER devices like my 9900.

I did encrypt the device itself though.

A better processor on your BB10's would make a big difference likely.

Ask Jennifer Lawrence or Scarlett Johansson if iOS is secure. Any wonder why the Goddess of Media Whores Kim K. uses BlackBerry? Where's her hacked stuff? Lord knows she's a magnet if there ever was one.

That has absolutely nothing to do with device security.

That's weak passwords on cloud storage.

So since I was using iCloud on my BB10 phone, it's insecure?

Plus Jennifer never had 2-step Verification turned on, I remember Apple saying that she only used a very simple password, as stated, and you would think someone like her or Kate Upton (who also had icloud pics taken if I recall) would have turned that feature ON! But most people cannot be bothered to enable more steps for security and don't want the hassle.

It was also people specifically focussing on their accounts trying to get in.

It's a nice way to look at it, I had been a BB user almost 10 years. However the problem is that BB10 devices doesn't get my work done anymore. None of my work apps are available on BB10. Some are on BBOS but they haven't been updated for years...

So here lies the issue: you can have the most productive and secure device but if you can't use it, it's worthless.

Also, security is the weakest link, if your apps hasn't been updated for years or that you can't secure the device on your corporate network (cause it's no longer supported) then it's not a secure device!

The "IT-expert" is half right. Apple iOS is definitely more secure than Blackberry Android phones. However, don't expect iOS to be more secure than BB10.

Security was never the purpose of Android.

I was once told that iPhone has the highest level of security that's why you cannot access and do many things on iPhone. By virtue of it not being able to do many things it is also not exposed to other apps and threats that itself is security.
