    20 questions: Sara Blakely
    By Emma Jacobs
The founder of the underwear company had been selling fax machines and office copiers and performing stand-up comedy at night when, in 1998, she cut the feet off a pair of control-top pantyhose so she could get a svelte look under trousers without stockings poking out of her sandals, thereby producing a primitive version of Spanx. Dubbed “magic knickers” because of their ability to streamline lumpy flesh and hide panty lines, the underwear is sold all over the world. The 40-year-old is married to Jesse Eric Itzler, also known as Jesse Jaymes, the American entrepreneur and former rapper

    IN MANAGEMENT
Should you relax rules with celebrities?
Raise your glasses to the craft brewers
The hunt for the Hispanic dollar
A new business model for Noah
    Creative, compassionate, funny and quirky.
What is best about being a woman in business?
    Being underestimated.
    And the worst?
    Being underestimated.
What are your three best features?
I have been told my smile, my willingness to trust my gut, and my ability to motivate others.
    And your worst?
Impatience, inability to focus, and my cellulite ... although it has made me a fortune.
What is the worst thing anyone’s said about you?
    I’m super-cranky (aka bitchy) when I’m hungry.
What is the best business book you have ever read?
    Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead.
Has your membership of the Delta Delta Delta sorority ever helped your career?
Yes. When I got my break with Neiman Marcus, I called all of my sorority sisters, friends and family in the cities where it was being tested asking them to make some purchases.
Do you talk business with your husband?
Yes, he likes to get my ideas and reaction, especially when it comes to marketing to women.
What was the inspiration behind Spanx?
    My own ****.
Did doing stand-up comedy help your business?
Yes, it helped me come up with the name Spanx, which has been hugely instrumental in the success of my business. From doing stand-up comedy, it is a known secret that the “k” sound makes people laugh. So, for good luck, I wanted my product’s name to have the “k” sound in it, and Spanks hit me. I changed the “k” to an “x” at the last minute.
Why did you go on a reality TV programme?
My friends always wanted me to go on The Apprentice, and I said that if Richard Branson ever had a reality show, I would do it. It was an amazing experience, and I was lucky to form a friendship with Branson.
When do you turn off your BlackBerry?
During family dinners. No BlackBerrys allowed at the table or in the bedroom.
What is the worst job you have ever done?
Putting people on rides at Disney World. I had to walk on a moving sidewalk for eight hours a day in a brown polyester space suit and say: “Hi, welcome to Disney. Watch your step please.”
What has been your smartest business idea?
Cutting the feet off of a pair of pantyhose.
    And biggest mistake?
Not doing due diligence on my manufacturer in the beginning. They went out of business and gave me only one week’s notice. It almost put Spanx out of business.
Have you ever lied at work?
Yes, my assistant and I tell each other we look great even when we look like crap.
What is your most hated business expression?
    Business is war.
Has your work affected your personal life?
Yes, I met my husband because of Spanx and now have a two-year-old son.
How do you want to be remembered?
As the woman who made the world a better place ... one **** at a time.
